• A small hamlet in the Kuanrmunda estate. The name of villages ended with ‘Kela’ , similar to ‘pura’ or
‘shasan’.
• Messers Bird & Co., Calcutta had planned for an Iron & Steel Industry (Steel Corporation of India), due to
high grade iron-ore deposits in the region.
• Among all the choices the availability of water from Brahmani river and the presence of Railway Station on
the Bengal- Nagpur Railway route made it a suitable choice.

Rourkela NAC came into existence comprising 26
revenue villages.
Rourkela was treated as Class II town spread over 31
revenue villages.
NAC-ST – Class I & NAC-CT – Class III town and
Rourkela Urban Agglomeration formed.
RSP developed Koel Nagar Housing Scheme under
NAC-ST.
Chhend Housing Area was included in NAC-CT.
Jalda declared town under Rourkela (UA).

• The growth is stagnant in the steel township and
the resettlement of Jhirpani.
• The civil township started growing from the
railway station towards west along the Main road
to the Brahmani river bank.
• The villages are the earlier settlements.
• The slums can be categorised into two types”
• Old Slums- older tribal settlements.

• New Slums- advantageous locations of

35. • Rourkela being a Steel City and a major commercial hub of Odisha, there are people from various corners
from the country. The major part of the population constitutes people from Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand
and the local tribal population (Santal, Rauli).
• The German Colony at Sector-9 was established for the German nationals who came to establish the Steel
Plant, a German Club was also built at Sector-2. Yet, now the colony is no more inhabited by them except
when some Germans come for a short period.
• The local tribal people have integrated into the modern society over the past few years while upholding
their cultural and social practices.
