Jacob sent his family and possessions across the Jabbok river, then wrestled alone with a man until daybreak. Though the man tried to leave at dawn, Jacob demanded a blessing first. The man told Jacob his name would now be Israel, because he struggled with God and men and overcame them. Jacob named the place Peniel, saying he saw God face to face and survived.
