REPRESSION
•After a long argument with his
conscience, Mort Rainey realized
that he had been repressing the
character that was the so-called
John Shooter.
•John Shooter no one more than
himself; a delusion.
•A character he created himself.
•His unconscious.
 The ego, or the I (as it is also
referred to) is the only
conscious part of the mind.
The only one capable of
consuming reality.
 It acts in a predictable
manner, usually creating
anxiety.
 When faced with the reality
of what really was, Mort
Rainey became extremely
anxious and bombarded the
motel room where he found his
wife laying in bed with another
man. His ego then used
repression to defend itself
•Projection: seeing in others their
faults, undesirable emotions or
tendencies that in fact exist in one’s
own unconscious.
•Paranoia: a mental disorder, (usually
triggered by anxiety or fear and
involves delusions, jealousy,
irrationality, persecution, etc.) is one
of the most extreme types of
projection.
•Like Rainey with John Shooter,
most paranoid individuals believe
that someone’s got it out for them;
that someone always wants to hurt
them.
MORT REINEY’S ARCHETYPE - SHADOW
 Shadow: The archetype of
darkness and repression
 Qualities we do not wish to
acknowledge and attempt to
hide from ourselves and
others
 The shadow consists of
morally objectionable
tendencies
John Shooter was Mort Rainey’s (Johnny Depp) Shadow
o Mort Rainey’s evil
personality who allegedly
committed the murders.
o Acted on Rainey's darkest
tendencies.
o Easier for Rainey to
project the darkness of
his personality to another
entity, in this case, John
Shooter.
This video clip shows how the evil and dark side of Mort Rainey’s unconscious
personality attempts to confront his conscious and reveal these repressed weaknesses and
emotions
• May indicate that one is concerned with
conflicting desires and intentions
• Unconscious vision, usually
same sex as subject
 Following the separation
with his wife, Rainey
secluded himself to the
woods to be alone and
write his book in solitude.
 Introverts, like Mort
Rainey, are tuned in to
their inner world with all
its biases, fantasies,
dreams, and
individualized
perceptions.
 He translated his repressed feelings and ultimately his
repressed behaviors onto a fictional character by the name of
Shooter.
 Shooter was in fact his way to deal with his anxiety.
 His reaction was indeed disproportionate to his reality. And
ultimately dominated his existence.
 According to May Neurotic anxiety leads defensive behaviors and to
repression. It is a reaction that is not proportionate to the threat.
 Neurotic Anxiety is felt whenever values are changed into dogma. This
type of anxiety blocks productive action and growth.
 Guilt is created when people do nor perceive the needs of others, when
they do not do everything with full potential, or they do not see their
dependence to the world.
 Quotes from the movie (Mort- main Character with John
Shooter-alter Ego):
 John Shooter: Thought you didn't smoke.
Mort: I took it up recently, for my health.
 John Shooter: Are you all right, Mr. Rainy? It sounded like
you pitched a fit or something in there.
Mort: I'm just peachy, Mr. Shooter. How are you?
 Mort: What do you want? You wanna kill me? Why don't you just
do it? Just kill me.
John Shooter: No, sir!
•Throughout the movie Rainey Mort encounters moment of neurotic
anxiety and guilt.
•Mort experiences neurotic anxiety which leads to the creation of his alter
ego. Observing the problems he deals with throughout the movie, he does
not respond proportionately in return, he over reacts to a great extent
(murder).
•To a certain extent, Mort feels a slight guilt. However since it is not
him(to his knowledge) that is causing the murders he does not feel
complete guilt. He does feel great guilt from problems with his wife and
the divorce he is going through which effects his writing skills.
AMY: YOU WERE
ALWAYS GONE.
MORT: I WORKED FROM
HOME, AMY.
AMY: WILL YOU CALL ME
IF YOU NEED
ANYTHING?
MORT: I DOUBT IT.
In order to solve the basic conflict of isolation people behave in a detached manner.
During a conflicting divorce Mort
Rainey adopted the neurotic trend:
Moving Away From People
NEUROTIC PRIDE
Mort suffered from a false pride
that went against his ideal self.
Not based on realistic views.
Qualitatively different from healthy
pride since he was committing Crimes,
created an alter ego, Leading him to
commit murder.
Without a grasp of reality.
Anxiety&conflictasaresultofisolation&helplessness
 After his wife's infidelity Mort
experienced feelings of isolation &
helplessness triggering basic anxiety.
 The inability to resolve certain issues with
his exwife created basic conflict.
 Triggering the tendency to withdrawal
from people & causing him to go against
them.
 Creating intrapsychic conflicts within him.
DEFENSE MECHANISM: DENIAL
 Raineys ideal self is in conflict with his alter egos decision.
 Does not allow him to realize & accept that he has committed murder.
