2. The next part of the
brief is to have fun with
your photography, and
add on some text
(typography) to make
your
Type Face
Design. Using
Photoshop, experiment
with different processes
To create an exciting
outcome.
3. For this part of the
brief, you must use
one of your own
photograph’s and
NOT a celebrity, as
it is hard to give you
higher than a Level
3 when you use
‘someone else’s
photograph’. This
is known as a
‘secondary source’.
4. Photoshop Photoshop Type Face
You are going to explore basic
techniques which you can use on
Photoshop to create a series of portrait
images that incorporate type.
What to do …
1.Open up Photoshop CS5
(this is under the Art folder)
2. Open PowerPoint or docs to SAVE
your scree shots to as you go along.
Open a ‘New’ document. Make the
width 297 mm and the height 420 mm
(resolution 72 pixels/inch)
Go to ‘File’ ‘Automate’ ‘Contact Sheet’
5. 4. On this document type
words that represent you. For
example. friends, football,
pizza, graphics… (save this
document)
5. Open up your portrait image.
Use the crop tool like this
and write in the measurements
width 210 mm and height 297mm
(resolution 72 pixels/inch) and
click crop.. (save this document)
6. 6. Drag the portrait image on
top of your text document.
Move the image so it fits
exactly over the text.
7. On the right hand tool bar
change the ‘Fill’ percentage so
the text shows through under
your portrait image.
7. 8. If you want to have more
text on your image you can
duplicate your text layer as
shown above
8. 9. Once you are happy with
your image go to ‘Layer’ then
‘Flatten Image’ and save your
document
10. To up the contrast of your
image go to ‘image’ then
‘Brightness/Contrast’
9. 11. To cut out your portrait so
you have a plain background
you can either use the rubber
tool or the lasso tool
12. You are now ready to
experiment and create some
final ‘Type Face’ images. Explore
some of the filter effects (tool
bar needed shown above)
14. Photoshop: Type Face Project - Outcomes
1.Complete 1 or 2 Boards of ‘Screen Shots’
which you will need to title this Board ‘Type
Face Brief: Process Board and Screen Shots.
On this Board, you should include:
1.Title – See above.
2.Screen shots showing the relevant
processes that you have taken to
complete your design.
3.Written notes, explaining the
decisions that you have made, and
how you have used Photoshop.
4.A small A5 or A4 version of your
final design.
2.A Final A3 print out of you
design which you will mount
and display for your portfolio.
