Year 10 Art Week 15.ppt
1.
2.
3.
4. Draw out your chosen fruit/veg at 2-4 times. You
should consider the whole composition of the double
page carefully
Option One: Repeat the same drawing
Option Two: Vary drawings: cut in half, a slice, close up
(focus on texture and mark making), at an angel with
perspective (using form and 3D)
Photograph these options so you can work from them
even after the fruit/veg has âgone offâ
5. Underpainting is when you start your painting by filling the canvas with a monochromatic
tonal wash.
It is usually followed by a roughly painted tonal study of the subject in just one colour.

6. -Underpainting encourages painting in
layers and helps you to âfinishâ paintings
quicker.
-Underpainting gives the composition
harmony by allowing the underpainting
colour to peep through layers. As the
underpainting colour subtly shows itself
throughout the painting it ties the piece
together.
-Underpainting helps to set a particular
mood by using either cool, warm or
complimentary tones.
-Underpainting provides you with a tonal
guide for applying subsequent colours
and layers of paint.
7. Use the predominantcolourin the scene
This is the simplest method. It will give your painting harmony
and assist in building up layers.
Use warmor cooltones
This will give your painting a sense of mood. For example, a
golden yellow underpaintingcan give a grey landscape a
sense of warmth and glimmer of hope.
Blues can give a painting a cold, distilled, icy feeling.
Use contrastingcolours
If your scene is predominantly green, you would use a red
underpainting. The idea is that the contrasting relationshipof
the colours creates light vibrations as the underpainting
peeks through and provides the painting with energy.
Here is a video demonstratinghow colour choices impact on
the overallpainting. Watch from start until 3.33mins

8. Apply a wash
to each of your
fruit/veg
sections or
one colour
over the whole
double page to
complete your
underpainting.
This will then
sets a middle
value and a
ground for
your painting.
9. You now need to add block
colours to your fruit/veg
considering where the dark
and light area are on the
object. This will now be your
foundation for beginning to
refine and detail and further
tone to your paintings.
It mightbe helpful to
print some imagesof
Artist paintingsof the
same fruit./veg that
you have chosen. This
will give you
inspirationfor
technique and
process.
10.
11. -Draw out your chosen fruit/veg at least two
times, under paint them and begin adding block
colours
-Choose a photograph to use for your
photoshop work and a final canvas painting.
Bring in a printed version and have it saved on a
memory stick(if unsure bring in several
images). The choice of image is really
important as this is going to be used for a final
outcome (there will be the option to use the
school photographic studio if needed this week
or next week). Your teacher will guide you with
what picture to use to unsure you have a
successful outcome!
