This document provides an overview of IBM's cloud offerings, including Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Software as a Service (SaaS). It describes IBM SmartCloud solutions for private cloud, services, and business applications available on cloud. The document discusses consulting, infrastructure, middleware, and security services to help customers build cloud strategies and deploy workloads on IBM's cloud platforms.
The IBM Cloud Offering Portfolio is an extensive collection of products that meet the needs of all kinds of businesses, large and small. However, having so many options can be daunting. This session aims to decode the offerings and provide guidance in making the right choices. I've been following cloud for it seems like a long time now, and I remember when I first became “cloud curious” how mysterious it was. Curiosity turned to obsession and I couldn't stop thinking about it. I just wanted to make sense of it all, so I did what I always do when I obsess over something – I developed an elaborate matrix...
Tech infrastructure & resources need to rapidly adapt to business needs. A cloud solution can result in reduced capital expenses and/or reduced operational cost. Resources can be shared across a large pool of users, allowing consolidation of infrastructure and costs, and more efficient management of workloads. A well-designed cloud that uses redundancy can be reliable and suitable for business. Resources are provisioned on demand and self-service. Cloud security can be as good as or better than traditional systems. Cloud applications are easier to support. Changes can be rolled out instantly. Resource usage is measurable.
These are the kind of questions that shaped IBM SmartCloud offerings.
Software as a Service (SaaS) delivers applications as a service over the Internet, eliminating the need to install these applications on the client computer. The service provider can maintain and update applications easily, efficiently, and transparently to the customer. Customers can save time and costs by using business solutions on cloud. Platform as a Service (PaaS) provides a computing platform or solution stack to facilitate development and deployment of applications. This service layer allows a customer to select a specific software instance that they want to create, without needing access to the underlying hardware and software resources. Key components include tools for developers, application servers, database services, and so on. Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) frees up resources your organization would otherwise use to house, run and maintain the equipment. This approach is best suited for resource intensive activities, such as development and testing. IBM hardware, software and services can also provide advance management capabilities, service assurance and integration for on and off-premise cloud resources. Cloud service providers create, manage, and monetize cloud services.
Main point: Our cloud capabilities are organized into 3 simple areas. SmartCloud Foundation, the integrated set of cloud enablement technologies for private and hybrid Clouds. SmartCloud Services , the IBM cloud platform designed for enterprise-class service delivery with PaaS/IaaS managed services. IBM SmartCloud service delivery platform is built upon the very same SmartCloud Foundation technologies that are clients are using. And SmartCloud Solutions , our growing list of business and industry solutions on the Cloud offered as SaaS. Capabilities such as Collboration, B2B Integration, Digitial Marketing Optimization… all delivered via SaaS.
Based on the same reliable technology as our public cloud offerings, IBM has developed a comprehensive product portfolio for building your own private or hybrid cloud. IBM SmartCloud Foundation features a range of cloud architecture components including physical infrastructure, virtual infrastructure, management, middleware, integration, security and consulting services. These components offer unparalleled time-to-market, integration and management capabilities.

Watson was designed to further the science of natural language processing by competing against the most successful Jeopardy! champions. Operating on a single CPU, it could take Watson two hours to answer a single question. A typical Jeopardy! contestant can accomplish this feat in less than three seconds. For Watson to rival the speed of its human competitors in delivering a single, precise answer to a question requires custom algorithms, terabytes of storage and thousands of POWER7 computing cores working in a massively parallel system. Excerpt: Want to tap into the artificial intelligence (AI) power of IBM’s Jeopardy!-winning Watson supercomputer? In the age of the cloud, there’s only one way: Watson-as-a-Service. “ #IBMWatson is ONLY available as a service…,” IBM said on its @IBMWatson Twitter page in reply to questions following a live chat on Twitter about Watson’s next acts. IBM also said there was no current use cases for Watson-as-a-Service (WaaS), a term IBM is already using. So what’s next for Watson? IBM said it was “a client-driven initiative. IBM pushes it in directions our clients need.” Wired Enterprise’s Robert McMillan reports Watson has been hitting the books, first in finance and most recently in medicine: Last week, IBM said that it was working with Citi to “explore how the Watson technology could help improve and simplify the banking experience,” but for the past six months, Big Blue has also teamed up with health insurer WellPoint to turn Watson into a machine that can support the doctors of the world.
