Exercise 1: Value Stream Mapping
What is a value stream map?
Use a value stream map to illustrate the flow of materials and information as a
product or service moves through the value stream.
A value stream is the collection of all activities, both value-added and non-
value added, that generate a product or service required to meet customer needs.
A current state value stream map identifies waste and helps you to envision an
improved future state.

The current state map answers the following questions:
► What does the actual process look like at the beginning of the project?
► Where does the process start and where does it end?
► How does value flow through the process?
► What steps in the process add value and what steps do not add value?
► What is the relationship between information flow and material flow?
► What is the average cycle time through the process?
► What level of inventory is held within the process and where is it located?
► What are the sources of the waste in the value stream?
► What areas of the process need the most improvement?

The future state map answers the following questions:
► Where will you need supermarket pull systems to control upstream processes?
► Where can you use continuous flow processing?
► When will you schedule production?
► How will you level the production mix?
► How can you simplify or eliminate any steps in the process?
► What does the actual process look like at the end of the project?

Timing Purpose
Project Start Gather information to identify the steps and the related data that help you
develop the current state map.
Mid-project Identify ideas for the future state map.
End of a Project Implement the future state so it becomes the current state.
Continuous As the future state becomes the current state, create a new future state map
and implement a plan to achieve it.

What do we need?
Data requirements must include complete knowledge of the existing process and
customer demand, cycle and lead times, inventories, and the path and timing of
information flows.

Example: Pipe Manufacturing
A company that produces pipes would like create a value stream map to illustrate
the flow of material and information as the pipes move thru the stream.

Exercise 2: Gage R&R Study
Is our measurement system adequate? Can we trust the measurements we get
from our measurement system?
Measurement systems can have two errors:
1. Precision
2. Accuracy

What is a Gage R&R study?
A Gage R&R Study is an experiment that we could do to find out if our
measurement system is precise.

What do we need in order to conduct a Gage R&R Study?
1. Randomly sample 10 parts from your production line. The parts need to represent the
population of parts.
2. Choose at least 3 operators from your population of operators.
3. Create a Minitab worksheet: Stat > Quality Tools > Gage Study > Create Gage R&R Study

4. Have each operator measure the 10 parts in random order (Minitab worksheet order). Then
have them measure the same parts again.
5. Analyze the data in Minitab: Stat > Quality Tools > Gage Study > Gage R&R Study

Example: Gage R&R Study - Pipe Thickness
Engineers believe that thickness of the pipes does not meet specifications.
Before they conduct a capability analysis, they want to make sure that the
measurement system is acceptable.
For the experiment, they will use 10 pipes, 3 operators and 2 replicates.

Stat> Gage R&R > Create Gage R&R

After the experiment has been conducted and the
data collected, put the data in the worksheet and
run the analysis: Stat > Quality Tools > Gage

Exercise 3: Capability Analysis
Is the process capable of meeting customer requirements?
How many defectives out of 1 million products should we expect to have?
What are the Cpk, Ppk, PPM values of the process?

What is Capability Analysis?
Capability analysis is a study that we can conduct to find out if our process meets
customer specification.

What do we need to conduct the study?
► Data collected in rational subgroups or individuals is needed. The data in each subgroup
should represent the inherent variation of the process at the time.
► Check assumptions (normality of data, process is stable.
We can use Minitab Stat > Quality Tools > Capability Sixpack > Normal to check for the
assumptions.
► Run the analysis.
In Minitab, we can use Stat > Quality Tools > Capability Analysis
► Interpret results

Example: Capability Analysis – Pipe thickness
After improving the measuring system, they now want to find out if the thickness
meets specifications (LSL= 1.1, USL = 1.5)
They measure the thickness of pipes in subgroups of 5.

Put the data in Minitab worksheet and create
a Capability Sixpack: Stat > Quality Tools >
Capability Sixpack > Normal

Check assumptions: Normality
of data and stable process

Run the analysis:
Stat > Quality Tools > Capability
Analysis > Normal

Look at Cpk, Ppk and PPM values

In Minitab Workspace, create an
analysis capture for the capability
analysis
