(so who is Landgate) Regular introduction and overview…Landgate has it’s roots in one of the oldest government agencies in Western Australia (Survey Office 1829) – it is critical that the oldest and most established organisations can adapt today’s challenges and stay relevant to your customers … and one of the ways we do this is through a commitment to innovation…….. (click to next slide where video starts automatically)
Landgate has always done things differently - we believe its our point of difference! From the development of the SLIP, to leading govt in energy efficiency in our building and family friendly, work/life balance initiatives, our ability to think outside the square has been central to our success. As markets get more challenging and pressure increases on govt to do more with less, for us a focus on innovation will mean our survival. We launched the program in 2008. It is the first of its kind in WA govt and Australia. Our aim is to empower our people to be the change we need.We accept that this is a long term investment in our future – most reading tells you that you wont see tangible $ returns for 5-10 years.Along the way our experience has shown the program is a great mechanism to develop culture, communication, capacity within Landgate.
The formula for making innovation work at Landgate is simple – we have these fundamentals.. (look at screen)The most important of these is staff inclusion and we’ve implemented this at every level by inviting staff involvement. Some of the ways in which we have done this include:communicationAn online forumPermission to use 5% of time on Landgate or other innovation (this is recorded)Its in our inductionIts in our JDFsIts in our performance management processWe’ve provided inspirational trainingWe focus on the 4 C’s – communication, collaboration, creativity and culture – if you have strategies to address these areas you are on the right trackBut above all, it’s critical to just do it! – be action orientated, accept that your governance and processes will change and grow - welcome that you will fail, but improve from the experience, embrace that it is a journey and you have to start somewhere!
(so what does it look like?)The landing page enables access to the different categories of the forum, and has information about what Innovation is, who is on it, and how it works – again transparent and accessible..Built on existing / free soft ware.Available to all staff and you can post an idea on anything. The forum is un moderated often the contribution of staff gets to the decision point for the review team. Our values underpin how staff use the forum and it has been shown that they work well in this collaborative environment. The power is in it’s accessibility and ease of use – there is no technology or understanding barrier to getting involved in innovation at Landgate
A suggestion for an internal collaborative portal was raised through the innovation forum and a new tool ‘SmartAsk’ was developed and is now a vital part of our online engagement strategy. Smartask has revolutionised the way staff communicate and publish professional information about themselves and their business units, and is providing a platform for next generation interactive corporate knowledge management tools.Smartask incorporates; a WIKI for knowledge capture and sharing communities allowing different areas of the business host their own area to assist with information sharing which can be locked to a certain group of peoplevideos, blogs and tweets. Smartask has been powerful in encouraging cross agency communication and sharing of information; while capturing knowledge, vital at a time when long serving employees are leaving the agency. The tool can also assist those new to the business with identifying projects, strategies and even which colleague to speak to. An internal ‘wiki’ application (called SmartASK)
These numbers (on the slide) are a great measure of how successful the program has become, and how engaged the organisation is..Along with the thousands of simple ideas we have looked at, some significant opportunities have surface, and we will touch on a couple of these now…Game changers like the EarthmineStreetView project, This creates high definition and measureable 3D streetscape imagery from cutting edge US technology for local planning and asset management applications. The Shared Land Information Platform Developers Program, where partners have created complex web applications to solve business problems for government administration, crowd sourcing of community information and planning or modelling. All using cross agency government as enabled by SLIP Innovation has also explored Mobile Phone Applications which propel Landgate intelligence into mobile market. Allowing access to information anywhere, any time to improve property investment decision making, travel planning and staff communication and collaboration. But it isn’t just about the ‘big stuff’, ideas as simple as work place weight-watchers programs, community event awareness advertising, and setting up internal classifieds are amongst the Program’s proudest successes!
Our online strategy continues externally to our website; which contains everything you’d want to know from Landgate or how to find it. It also hosts an online shop with over ??? Products. This online shop enables us to offer products in a highly competitive environment and continue to grow these products to react to business, environment and consumer demands. Over ??? Transactions occur everyday. Landgate embraced social media and set up a corporate Twitter and YouTube account. Our twitter account now has 227 followers. Creating a YouTube account has enabled us to share some of the visual products and services available at Landgate and demonstrate what they can do. Corporate Videos are also being developed to further explain Landgate, it’s products and services.
We were very proud to recently host the 7th International symposium on Digital Earth in conjunction with our highly successful WALIS forum. ISDE is an internationally significant event, first championed by the former US vice president Al Gore. This years theme is ‘the knowledge generation’, and was an excellent opportunity to collaborate with innovators and digital leaders from around the world. The innovation project funded and developed a free iPad application for the conference which ended up having 200 downloads. This equated to one in every four conference attendees downloading and interacting with the application. A great result for Landgates first venture into this area.
The iPad application and a large screen in the conference exhibition area, promoted the use of Twitter during the conference. The MC encouraged interaction and by the end of the first day the conference was trending in Perth. Here is a mash up of some of the tweets. The tweets provided instant feedback and generated some interesting topics of discussion throughout the conference.
We really believe in the benefits of Innovation, and we want to share our experiences with you. We recently launched our innovation program…. And the website brings our tools and learnings together into a package you can apply to your business! There is no need to re-invent the wheel, learn from what we have done, and adapt it to your organisation. We are really keen to learn about what you have done, and work together to improve innovation capacity across the public sector
