 Example: The Bachelor and Temptation Island
 They offer the viewers peculiar speciments of
humankind, often encouraging not identification
but vilification, ridicule and sarcastic commentary.
 These shows subject certain genders but yet it’s
very entertaining.

3. A brief history of TV
Dating
 Many dating shows, interest the viewer to know
what was going on behind closed doors.
 Tv Shows: Love Connection, Perfect Match &
Blind Date
 Gave the industry an early look into audience to
root for the unhappy ending.
 Dating shows: rely on the pleasures of seeing a life
more messy than yours.

filmed, the show: the American Blind Date was
picked up by Universal.

6. Making the Shoe Fit:
Dating Show as Fairy
Tale
 Dating shows stir up a female gender role: fairy
tale ethos.
 The bachelor serves as an example: having all the
elements of a fairy tale.
 The rose ceremony: gives women very little power.
 Gender- flipping variant: Cupid, The Bachelorette,
and Average Joe: make women more desperate
than cool and men more power and agency in the
process.

 Beauty pageants or the Victoria Secret fashion
show only happens once a year, but dating shows
have displayed women on a regular.
 The rose ceremony gives the Bachelor a more
masculine viewer the chance to pick women as if
from a magazine.
 Dating shows commonly dedicate considerate time
to scenes of the female’s judging each other.
