2. Introduction
An investment banker in Fountain Hills, Arizona,
Michael Quiel guides Legend Advisory Corporation as
president. Also a longtime supporter of charity,
Michael Quiel has donated $2 million to the Rypien
Foundation. The nonprofit was established by retired
NFL quarterback Mark Rypien, who lived through the
tragedy of his son dying of cancer.
The foundation offers support to the families of those
who are battling childhood cancer. One of its projects
involves supplying the Sacred Heart Children’s
Hospital with audiology equipment. This reflects an
acute need of young patients, many of whom
experience hearing loss related to antibiotics and
chemotherapy treatment.
3. Rypien Foundation
The equipment, which was purchased from the
2007 Zak!Charity Open, enables parents to avoid
travel to other clinical locations.
The Rypien Foundation has also used fundraising
as a means of supplying hospital patients with IV
backpacks. Designed to help children to gain
independence from IV poles, the backpacks
contain chemo treatments and an IV pump. As
chemo treatments can last as long as three days,
this offers children a chance to be active while
receiving medication, instead of tethered to a
hospital bed.
