Starbucks “Frappuccino” was debuted by Starbucks in 1995. It now comprises 64% of almost $1bil US Ready-to-Drink coffee market. In its Coffee report, Mintel attributes RTD coffee’s performance, which is projected to continue to grow, to the demand for sweet drinks among young adults and the introduction of coffee-and-energy-drink combinations that also appeal to younger consumers. This group does not spend much time brewing coffee.CI DriversAccelerate Business Reduce time to revenue Accelerate IT deployment Save timeLower Costs Improve app density Improve data density Reduce power & cooling Cut lifecycle maintenanceSimplify IT Consolidate apps/data Simplify maintenanceReduce risk Improve uptime and Biz continuity Improve backup/DR Improve security Improve regulatory compliance
FlexPod is the most efficient way to make a successful journey to your next-generation data center.FlexPod accelerates the transformation from infrastructure silos to a virtualized, shared environment with pre-validated, standardized, scalable building blocks that leverage a next-generation data center solution from Cisco, NetApp, and leading OS and hypervisor partners.Unlike other solutions, FlexPod is a flexible platform—designed to fit many environments and handle mixed workloads. It can be easily tuned and optimized for your specific requirements. They are backed by easy-to-use tools that facilitate your design and sizing process—so you can add applications, and scale up and out as necessary. The solutions are integrated—so you can count on centralized and simplified management. And the solutions are pre-validated—so they facilitate rapid, repeatable deploymentBenefitsFlexibility: Future-proof platform to meet today’s challenges and scale for future needsBuilt-in data center efficiencies: lower TCO with simplified deployments, rapid provisioning of resources Reduce risk with prevalidated architecture with prescriptive sizing and design guides
IT teams are evolving how they deploy and buy infrastructure, and are shifting to Converged Infrastructure or “CI”. One analyst said, “In a few years, we’ll move away from people buying [infrastructure] piece parts.” The FlexPod CI solution is the ‘Fast Forward button’ for IT Infrastructure.Advanced Server DesignHigh computing and memory density Manage multiple enclosures and servers with a single interfaceUnified FabricEliminates the need for multiple sets of adapters, cables, and switches80% reduction in ports and cablingUnified StorageNative deduplication, thin provisioning, compression, and more Use 50% less storageShrink your time to solution, and data center footprint by 50% or more
Key point: FlexPod architecture scales down and up to support SME, Branch office, enterprise and even Service Provider environmentsFlexPod is a standard architecture that can be sized for small enterprises or very larger enterprises. The architecture is consistent from small to large with the same capabilities, technology and management tools. A company can scale a small environment to a very large environment without ever forklifting technology, changing management tools or methodologies. At the Server layer, UCS can scale to 10,000 nodesAt the Network layer, the Nexus 7000 provides the highest switching capacity in its class; supporting 100 GbE, up to 550 Gigabits capacity per slot, 17.6 terabits per chassis, and 90,000 layer 2 virtual ports. At the storage layer, NetApp FAS storage with Clustered Data ONTAP scales to 24 node clusters with 50PB of total storage capacityKey points; Flexible Pod design simplifies deploymentTo accelerate deployment of the FlexPod architecture, NetApp and Cisco have created a pod architecture. This pod architecture allows pre-built and pretested pods to arrive on the data center floor for quick implementation. To facilitate the wide variety of customer requirements we’ve made the pod sizes flexible. They can be sized to meet the specific workload in the customer environment. Advanced sizing tools characterize the application and data center requirements. The Pod elements can then be uniquely configured to meet those requirements. A VDI requirement can be configured that delivers high memory and high disk IOPs. A development and test environment can be configured with extensive compute but limited storage.

Key Point: FlexPod supports a broad ecosystem of orchestration partners to simplify implementation of a private CloudFlexPod also supports a broad ecosystem of cloud management partners for full private cloud functionality. Cloupia simplifies the interface into flexPod and together with our cloud partners we enable full stack orchestration across the physical layer, virtual layer, service layer and application layer. A data center manager can pull from a catalog of standard service offerings and with a single operation provision the entire environment. These tools also support service analytics, showback/chargeback and self – service portalsCisco’s newly acquired Cloupia product provides centralized orchestration and automation across these environments leveraging API’s from the element managers. Service catalogs are created in the element managers. These API’s and the service catalogs can be selectively exposed by the resource owner to be centrally orchestrated by the Cloupia tool. Cloupia was the first vendor to get classified as a FlexPod Validated Management partner and went through extensive lab testing and validation before eventually being acquired by Cisco. TransitionTogether these capabilities reduce operational or opex costs even as the environment scales.
The Cooperative Support Model represents a multivendor engagement that includes not only NetApp and Cisco, but also an ecosystem of software partners such as VMware, Microsoft, Citrix, Redhat, Oracle, SAP, and others. Vendor relationships between executives, business units, and engineering teams help make sure customers get what they need to keep their mission-critical data center infrastructure up and running smoothly. The customer’s IT staff chooses which vendor to call upon based on their initial assessment of the problem’s origin. Today, only about 2% of all FlexPod cases are escalated to a second vendor, because 98% are resolved by the first vendor contacted. And, with support staff cross-trained to identify common FlexPod issues and use formal collaboration processes, when cross-vendor escalations are necessary, they are quickly and seamlessly resolved.Transition:But the Cooperative Support Model doesn’t only facilitate customer success directly. It also helps authorized resellers provide consistent and excellent support for their FlexPod customers.Note: The Unified Support process shown in this slide applies only to strategic alliance partner solutions such as FlexPod for VMware.Service workflow for problem resolution: The customer opens a support case with the company suspected to be the cause of the problem (Company A). The first company contacted, Company A, is designated the owner of the case through resolution. If Company A determines that the issue may be another partner’s solution component, the following cooperative support action is taken:Company A support hosts a phone call between Company A, the customer, and Company B to assist the customer in opening a secondary support request with Company B.Once the customer has opened the secondary service request with Company B, Company A and Company B work collaboratively on the issue until the problem is resolved.Case ownership remains with Company A (the original vendor) until the case is resolved or the customer approves the transfer or closure of the case.Note: NetApp cooperative support is available for SupportEdge Premium Customers. Customers must have active support contracts with all vendors.

Cisco, NetApp, and our FlexPod Partners have seen dramatic success since FlexPod was introduced in November of 2010.According to Gartner, FlexPod dominates the certified systems/converged infrastructure market with more than 80% share.IDC calls FlexPod “one of the most complete private cloud architectures available”Sauber F1 -- “We’re also able to complete all major IT technology refreshes during the two- week break when by international agreement all Formula One racing teams cannot work. With MetroCluster, we can do updates during that break and with zero downtime. We fail over one node while we upgrade it, then fail back and upgrade the second. UP-GREAT completed this year’s upgrade in two hours. Marcel Keller, storage and backup specialist at UP-GREAT, agrees that this could not have been done without MetroCluster. He jokes that if it wasn’t for this annual maintenance upgrade, his support team would have nothing to do. We did the necessary maintenance of the FlexPod platform going to the track in an hour, a process that used to take four weeks when we had four racks of equipment we had to fly back to Hinwil for upgrades.” ING Direct -- Provisioning a single copy of the bank’s environment for testing took eight people three months, which “…severely limited how many concurrent projects and changes we could manage.” Andrew Henderson, CIO, ING DIRECT; Developers and testers needed to accelerate time to market for development of new products and services. Bank in a Box, which is built on a FlexPod® with Microsoft® Private Cloud solution Highly scalable data center solution with Cisco® Unified Computing System™, Cisco Nexus® switching, NetApp® FAS storage system, Windows Server® 2008 Hyper-V™, and Microsoft System Center to rapidly provision new environments and accelerate testing of new offerings; Copies” of the bank environment are available to developers in 10 min. vs. 12 weeks, dramatically accelerating time to market for new products and services Can provision copies of the bank quickly and efficiently, amplifying available storage by 4,000% ; NetApp FlexClone® technology enables multiple copies of the bank to be created quickly and occupy negligible space on the storage array; NetApp Snapshot™ copies and deduplication save an additional 20% of storageVirtustream : http://www.netapp.com/us/media/virtustream.pdfVirtuastream is a cloud service provider in EMEA and the US that is focusing on enterprise class applications such as SAP. They’ve migrated SAP environments from companies like Domino Sugar to their FlexPod based cloud and are delivering it with better service levels and lower cost than when their customers ran it themselves. (note some of this data is in a webcast we did with them this fall. While the case study doesn’t mention FlexPod, they are also quoted in our Jan 24thFlexPod press release. )
