Case Study
Institution Façade
The process:
• The conservators will inspect every item.
• They will log condition using a tablet with autocad in the field.
Deliverable:
• One CAD drawing of 16 facades over two city blocks.
• Linework of rectilinear features in CAD file must be as it “should” be
not as it actually is.
• Ortho image for all schist and ornamental features
• Compressed timeframe. Start delivering files in two weeks on a
rolling schedule.

Procedure
Field:
• Scan each façade from at least 2 stations
• Set density ~ 1 cm
• Minimal control
Cyclone:
• Register as we go using targets and cloud-to-cloud.
• Cull the point cloud to specific façade and clean out noise
• Create coordinate system specific to façade
• Project cloud to front view in ortho mode
• Export ortho image
AutoCAD:
• Import image.
• Draft linework by entry-level technician

Create a
Coordinate System
• Create lines that best file
the vertical & horizontal
axis of the façade.
• Set the coordinate system
to match these lines. Be
careful of the order lines
you pick.
• Set orthogonal view & front
view
• Turn off the lines.
Otherwise they will show in
the image

Adjust Point Cloud
Appearance
• Play with settings to find
best contrasting image.
B/W worked best in this
case.
• Adjust Global Color Map
Setting under
• Change the min and max
improve contrast. This will
hide some points

Export Image
• Zoom and pan to center
the image you can to
capture.
• Remember you can do an
overall and tile. (just keep
the TFW)
• Choose a width and keep
the aspect ratio.

Best Practices
• Watch point density! Too much GB++ too little and you
return to the field
• Keep each façade in a unique coordinate system
• Change point cloud appearance to improve contrast
• Create multiple images to reduce the burden and to
maximize the point density to pixel size
• Put each façade in a unique subdirectory.

• Rooflines or Overhangs
• . . . Items that need to be shown graphically, but not necessary to
high precision.

Conclusions
•A picture tells a thousand stories
•Common ground can be found
•Simpler is better
•Use additional tools to keep high-value equipment busy
•. . . And get additional exposure.
