39. Winning the Basketball War (LIFE) with Sun Tzu’s 6 Principles 1. Win All Without Fighting: Achieving the Objective Without Destroying It Sun Tzu’s War: “When you fight, you fight for something of value, and should you destroy yourself or that something of value while fighting to obtain it, then you have lost your real purpose for fighting.” My Life’s War: Just like in a basketball game, winning in life means being able to achieve my goals through the full use of my capabilities and strengths without hurting or injuring other people intentionally for my own gain. Basketball Equivalent: Winning the Game with least Cost (Injured players)
40. Winning the Basketball War (LIFE) with Sun Tzu’s 6 Principles 2. Avoid Strength, Attack Weakness: Striking Where the Enemy is Most Vulnerable Sun Tzu’s War:“Now an army may be likened to water, for just as flowing water avoids the heights and hastens to the lowlands, so an army avoids strength and strikes weakness.” My Life’s War: In life, my greatest enemy is myself. In order to win, there’s no better way than to know myself deeper, that is, be more aware of my strengths and my weaknesses. In my case, I would have to learn how to utilize these strengths to my advantage and overcome my weaknesses so that I could win my own battles. Basketball Equivalent: Scouting your Opponents
41. Winning the Basketball War (LIFE) with Sun Tzu’s 6 Principles 3. Deception and Foreknowledge: Winning the Information War Sun Tzu’s War:“All warfare is based on deception.” My Life’s War: For me to win the Information War, I should always carry with me updated knowledge of my environment (home, workplace, community). There are also instances when some of my family members, friends, or colleagues would be interfering or opposing my goals and objectives in life. In these cases, I would have to move quickly before my plans to achieving my goals are thwarted. Basketball Equivalent: Ball Faking
42. Winning the Basketball War thru Sun Tzu’s 6 Principles (ART OF WAR) 4. Speed and Preparation: Moving Swiftly to Overcome Resistance Sun Tzu’s War:“Speed is the essence of war. Take advantage of the enemy's unpreparedness; travel by unexpected routes and strike him where has taken no precautions.” My Life’s War: I would have to support myself with various life’s experiences and applications. This way I would be more prepared in dealing with life. It’s about learning the trades of life so that I could be able to adapt more easily and quickly to changes in my environment. I don’t want to be surprised by unlikely circumstances in life so I should be ready and prepared at all times. These could come from my own experiences, observations, readings, and lessons from other people. Basketball Equivalent:Basketball Trainings and Practices
43. Winning the Basketball War thru Sun Tzu’s 6 Principles (ART OF WAR) 5. Shaping the Enemy: Preparing the Battlefield Sun Tzu’s War: “Therefore those skilled in war bring the enemy to the field of battle and are not brought there by him.” My Life’s War: It’s about me shaping my life by defining the rules that would serve as my guiding principles when I do my actions and decisions. It’s about me discerning clearly where I would want to go, taking the rudder, and putting situations in my own hands. It’s about maintaining good plans and strategies in addressing various struggles that would come my way. Basketball Equivalent:Dictating the Tempo of the Game
44. Winning the Basketball War thru Sun Tzu’s 6 Principles (ART OF WAR) 6. Character-Based Leadership: Leading by Example Sun Tzu’s War: “He who knows the art of the direct; (Cheng) and the indirect (Ch'i) approach will be victorious.” My Life’s War: My victory will never be as valuable if I haven’t been a good example to those who have been my life’s spectators (family, friends, colleagues, and students). I should not only be someone who could see the right course of action but is someone who could empower others through my own example. I am a fan of Mahatma Gandhi’s quote, “My life is my message.” Indeed, I am the one who define the type of person or leader that I am and the way I live my life is my message to the rest of the world around me. Basketball Equivalent:Coach
