`The quotation on the slide presents the very real challenges of globalisation, as conveyed in a rather humorous manner by a Singaporean Muslim blogger. The poppadom, of course, represents the opportunities brought about by globalisation – it can be yours for the taking, but only if you know how to get to it.
The forum was initiated as part of a series of projects in response to findings from Focus Group Discussions on Globalisation held by the Community Leaders’ Forum between Feb-June 2007. The FGDs revealed that many young Malay/Muslims were not equipped with the skills and knowledge on how to successfully participate in globalisation. For example, some tertiary students did not even bother to apply for international student exchange prgrammes because they thought that only straight ‘A’ students would qualify.
Other that the I on the World forum, there are several other projects borne out of the FGD.
Carpe Diem Workshop: Taking our first global step was held on 12 Apr 2008 with Dr Fatimah Abd Lateef as the Guest-of-Honour. A total of 22 participants attended the workshop. Participants were enlightened with information on overseas programmmes and funding-related issues. VRD had invited Ms Hamidah Salleh from International Relations Office, NUS to speak on international programmes available and Ms Janet Neo, a financial consultant with OCBC Bank to speak on funding-related issues. Both speakers had vast experiences in studying or working overseas. Together with Dr Fatimah, they shared their experiences and answered the participants’ queries on overseas opportunities as well as other concerns. Mr Suresh Shah, an Associate Consultant from Singapore Professionals and Executives’ Co-operatives and Mr AbuAyubul, founder of NowAsia conducted workshops on “Acquiring the Interviewing Skills” and “Art of Networking” respectively. Parents’ Seminar: Its Challenges and Benefits ‘ Parents’ Seminar: Its Challenges and Benefits’ was held on 6 Apr 2008 at Toa Payoh Central Community Club. The Guest of Honour was Mr Hawazi Daipi. The objective of the seminar was to create awareness amongst Malay/Muslim parents on globalisation and overseas opportunities in order to help their children in the future. A total of 49 parents attended the seminar, which was conducted in Malay. In general, the seminar consisted of presentation by the project team member, Mdm Rasimah Jar and a video montage put together by MENDAKI volunteers. We had invited guest parents to share their tips and experiences on tackling the issues faced by parents when their children went overseas to study or work. Apart from the seminar, workshops were held for participants on strategies of communication in the era of globalisation and building their children’s portfolio. INTERNSHIPS Internships and exchange programs for students were collated and posted on global malays portal. Financial aids, scholarships and sponsorships were also uploaded.

While that caters for those going overseas… What about the local undergraduates? Don't worry, we too have something in store for you. You see, our project ' Carpe Diem: Taking Our First Global Step' is something these undergraduates should look out for. We want to facillitate the information access for the local undergraduates on various overseas opportunities available and create a network of students who had gone for such programmes. - Hence, the project is put forth to highlight, encourage and aid the aspiring students to take their first steps to cross over the borders of Singapore and seize such global opportunities. The project is necessary in order to share experiences, distribute information, dispel misconceptions and stem insecurities that the students may face.
