For my magazine I have chosen the genre of pop. I have chosen this because
it is very popular in today's society so I believe there will be a lot to analyse
                                      and discuss.
The term Pop originally came from the word 'popular' showing that it is one of
the most well know genres around. I enjoy the genre myself also, because I
feel that it is quite broad in terms of the music within it, whether this is the
pace of the song or the melody of it there is always a song for your mood.
Pop music draws thousands of listeners worldwide with the main UK charts
                             mainly devoted to this genre.
My love for the genre has partially stemmed from my sister. She began listening
to this kind of music (Katy Perry/Lady Gaga) a few years ago when I was
slightly younger so I guess I just got used to listening to this kind of music. I
then became very into other pop artists such as The Wanted and Justin
                                         Bieber.
In the past couple of years my love for music
has grown and I now enjoy many other genres
such as Rap, R&B, Rock etc but I think pop will
always remain one of my favourites.
The amount of time that the pop genre has been around for is
debatable. 'The term "pop song" is first recorded as being used
in 1926, in the sense of a piece of music "having popular
appeal"'. This extract taken from
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pop_music tells me about this
appeal that many people had to the genre in the 20's. However
many people believe that Michael Jackson is the 'king of
pop' and they say that the pop genre didn't really exist until he
became popular. Since then there has been many very
successful artists such as Madonna, Lady GaGa and Katy Perry.
Throughout the years the Pop genre has changed massively. It first
started off as a mixture of other genres of music, from there it almost
formed its own sound and has become what it is today. In the 1940's
the improved technology and microphone design allowed singers to
have a more intimate singing style'. About 10 years later more durable
records came about which helped pop music move into the radio/film
industries. Another thing which made the genre so much more
popular was the availability of televisions in the 1950's. With
performances from stars such as ABBA the pop genre had never been
more popular. It wasn't until the early 1980's when the promotion of
pop music had been greatly affected by TV channels like MTV. They
made artists like Madonna and Michael Jackson favourites for the
public with their strong visual appeal.
Micro elements make up the macro elements of
the genre.
These include things like instruments, vocals,
melody, tune etc. Its these things which
determine the Macro elements such as the
audience and genre of the music.
I will take these things into consideration when I
make my publication as I understand how much
they contribute to the genre and make it
complete.
• The contents and lyrics of the songs are normally about love and relationships. The listener can often
relate to these topics and you will often be able to find a song to fit your mood, whether its happy or
    sad.
• The videos for the songs very often appear quite sexual and raunchy or tell some sort of story. It appears
that within the Pop genre this is always a succesful way to sell the song and the artist. I find this quite
interesting because pop is very much aimed at the younger generation (young teens-young adults) who
    look up to these people.
• The images of these artist and the way they are portrayed in the public eye is very important to them. It
seems that most of the female artists want to be shown in a sexual way. Most of the magazine covers or
photos that you see of the artist she seems to be posing in a slightly inappropriate way or wearing
clothes that may not be considered as appropriate.
• The image that some of these artists show can be very ‘out there’. They like to shock people and to do
this are forever changing their image. For example Lady Gaga her outfits, hair and makeup are
constantly changing. Some could say that people like Gaga don’t really fit into the pop category because
she is so different from anyone else which is very different to
the music that she writes and performs.
• Within this genre artists are always changing their hair or way
they dress. This is to ensure they stay current and fit in with the
pop genre that their music is.
