who don’t succeed , retake an examination in

19. 1) Students in Grade C are required to attend General,
Orientation and Elective courses throughout the
school year.
2)At the end of the school year they take written
exams on a National Level called the Panhellenic
Examinations to enter Higher Education by being
evaluated in written performance in 4-5 subjects
according to the Orientation Group of their
preference.
3) All Faculties and Schools in Higher Education are
classified in 5 Scientific Fields that the students can
choose from , according to their prior preference of
Orientation Group courses. They may choose 2 fields.

21. Higher Education or Tertiary Level
Higher Educational Institutes (University) : there are 21 Universities
in Greece that are divided in Faculties, subdivided in Schools and finally in
Departments. The total is 260
Higher Technological Educational Institutes : there are 16
Technological Institutes in Greece divided in Sectors. The total number is 195
Open University: It was established in 1998 and resides in Patra. Its main
principle is to offer life-long learning. It has also adopted the system of
distance learning, thus facilitating learning opportunities for different age
groups
Higher School of Pedagogical and Technological Education: it
provides research in educational technology or pedagogy as well as training
or specialization for in-service or prospective secondary teachers
Higher Vocational Education: it provides vocational training in sectors
related with tourism, the navy, army, police, religion. Schools include the
Naval, Military and Police Academies, Schools of Drama and Dance etc.
22. Duration of Studies and Degrees
1) It ranges from 4-6 years depending on the
Discipline chosen by the candidate at admission
level. For instance, The School of Law requires 4
years of study, while the School of Medicine 6
years.
2) Graduates are awarded Degrees at the
completion of their studies.
3) Further studies include a Master’s Degree (2-3
years) and a Ph.D (Doctorate), 3-5 years of studies.
