How to Train a Lab Puppy on Your Own
1. How to Train A Lab Puppy On Your Own
Labrador retrievers are naturally friendly and playful because of which this
breed of dog has always been the most preferred family dogs. However to
enjoy your pet and nurture the relationship you share with your dog,
training is very important. In this article I am going to share some simple
tips on how to train a lab puppy.
Training Lab puppies must start at an early age. As Labs age, they grow in
size and acquire habits which may be difficult to wean away. Hence the
earlier you start the better it is. Most dog trainers recommend 8-10 weeks
as the ideal age when the dog training must begin.
Training lab puppies has another advantage- it is much easier to influence
and teach an impressionable puppy as compared to a fully grown one.
1. Pat your pup
Labrador puppies love to be patted, touched, and caressed. During the
training period this can be a big incentive. Pat your pup when he deserves
it- when he displays good, acceptable behavior. This will serve as a
2. positive reinforcement for the canine to pick up and display acceptable
behavioral traits more often.
2. Playtime
Even if you are engaging a trainer for your pup, it is important that you and
your family members actively participate in the training program. Make sure
that you have dedicated time slots for play time with your pup. As far as
possible have at least 2 play times- one in the morning and one in the
evening. You could engage in a number of activities during this playtime
like fetching a ball, bringing a toy or hunting for a toy.
3. Socialization
This is an important aspect of Labrador retriever training which all dog
trainers emphasize upon. Socialization is important for your pet to get used
to other animals and humans.
3. (Dogs which are socialized have the ability to interact with other dog breeds and communicate with them
irrespective of size and shape)
Socializing could be anything like taking your pup for walks and short trips
to places that are not densely populated. You or your family member must
always accompany your pet and be there for him should he become
anxious or worried for any reason. Often strange sights and sounds can
scare a pet and make it anxious. It is therefore important that you pet is
never left alone during his outings.
4. Go slow
Do not expect your Lab to pick up things fast. Ensure that the training is
slow and steady. During the first few weeks, training should preferably be
restricted to 15-20 minutes. Gradually increase the training time.
Remember dog training is hard in the initial stages and will take some time.
Be patient with you lab pup which can become boisterous if pushed
unnecessarily. Never use force while training lab puppies. Force or
punishment of any kind will only add to your petâs anxiety and frustration.
4. By scouting the internet you will find plenty of tips on how to train a lab
puppy. Alternatively you can read books to figure out what Labrador
Retriever training is all about. In certain cities there are doggy daycares
which take your dog and train your pet. In case you are hard for time or if
your dog is too set in its ways to be trained easily, doggy daycares may be
an option worth considering.
I personally trained my Lab- I considered Labrador retriever training as an
excellent opportunity for me to bond with my pet. I did not enroll for any
obedience training for my Lab. With the help of an online video course
which taught me how to train a lab puppy from home I was able to learn the
tricks and tips required for training a Labrador myself. Today I and my pet
buddy share a great bond and enjoy each otherâs company immensely.
