Codes and conventions of music video (images)
1.
2. *STYLES OF MUSIC VIDEO*
• Music videos can be categorized in relation to style:
•
•
•
•
•
•
Performance- band/artist playing
Narrative- Includes a story
Mixture- Both performance and narrative based
Cameo- band/artist feature in the narrative but doesn’t perform
Animation- CGI/Stop frame
Concept- Artistic idea, not necessarily related to the song
3. *CAMERA SHOTS*
The camera angles/shots depend on what style the music
video is:
•
•
•
Crane Shot- Usually used in performance based music videos, especially when
stages are used. This enables the camera to hover above the stage, and capture
the performance from many different angles.
Pans/Tilts- These shots are effective when panning round a location, to enable
the viewer to get a real sense of the video. But are also commonly used to pan
from musician to musician, for example in a band’s music video, the camera
could pan from one member to another.
Close Ups- These shots are generally used to focus in on the music artists’
faces, this makes the viewer aware of the musician. Extreme close ups are
often used too, this could be to focus in on the singer’s lips, eyes etc… or to
focus in on instruments, important props… Close ups are frequently used in
narrative based videos, to focus in on the actors/musicians faces, to emphasise
the facial expressions and emotions.
4. *MORE CAMERA SHOTS*
• Establishing Shot- These shots are great for setting the scene to the
audience. This could be used in any style of music video.
• Low Angle Shot- This is shot from a high angle, to show the subject down
below. This could be used in performance based videos, to give a birds eye
view. It could also be used in narrative based videos, for example to make
someone/something look weak, small and vulnerable.
• High Angle Shot- This has the opposite effect to low angle shots, in terms of
how it makes the characters/objects appear. In a narrative based video, a
high angle shot will make the subject look bigger, stronger and more
powerful.
• Tracking Shots- These are used to follow a person/objects movements: for
example this could be used in a narrative based video, to follow a persons
footsteps.
5. *EDITING AND SOUND*
The editing process plays a huge part in the end result of a music video. The shots
that will be used need selecting, then they need editing together, in a visually
pleasing format. Then there is one of the most crucial elements in the music video
editing process. The lip sync. It is important that you get this right, otherwise the
movement of the singer and the song being played will be out of time, causing
your video to look unprofessional.
Here are some elements which are often used within the editing process of
music videos:
• Jump Cutting
• Split Screens
• CGI Effects
• Diegetic and Undiegetic Sounds
• Footage is used to match the lyrics
• Changes in Sound Levels
6. *Mise En Scene*
The mise en scene is very important in music videos, and can vary greatly
depending on the type of music video:
•
•
•
•
Props- performance equipment, band merchandise.
Costume- this often reflects the genre of music.
Location- this could be anywhere!
Facial expressions- resembles the mood of the song.
7. *Examples of Mise En Scene in different Genres of Music Video*
POP- pop videos usually feature bright colours, flashing lights and tend to be
creative. This reflects the bright, upbeat style of the music. This generally appeals to
a younger audience, as they can often relate to the lyrics, and the artists of pop
songs tend to be of a young age.
ROCK- rock music videos tend to have quite a dark setting. The objects featured
within the videos tend to be musical instruments such as drums and guitars,
therefore many rock song videos are performance based. The facial expressions
shown within the genre rock often reflect the angry, serious mood of the songs.
RnB- RnB has similar mise en scene to that of hiphop. They usually feature simple
settings. Women are often featured in a revealing manner, through their clothing
and dance moves. This is to promote sex appeal, to attract a male audience.
Expensive objects are often featured in RnB such as cars and jewellery, and things
which promote wealth.
