The document provides instructions for older adults to create a short video about one of the apps they use regularly or find most useful. Participants are asked to make a list of the apps they use, circle one app, list benefits of that app, then record and upload a video under 5 minutes describing why they like the app and sharing a feature or benefits. Instructions are included for recording on a Mac and uploading the video file to a Dropbox folder. The purpose is to learn about the apps older adults find most useful and their motivations for using different apps.

1. Thank you for helping me with my thesis! This is part
of the work I’m doing towards my Master’s degree in
Interaction Design at California College of the Arts.

2. I am curious about the apps that older adults are using
and the motivations they have for using those apps.

3. I will ask you to think about the apps you use and then
create a video about one of them. Don’t worry if you
don’t know how to record a video from your computer.
I will walk you through the process.

4. Before you begin:
Make sure you have a pen and something to write on.
You may want to have your smartphone and/or tablet
at hand as well.

5. Make a list of the apps you use.
These apps can be desktop apps that you use on your
Mac or PC or they can be mobile apps that you use on
your smartphone or tablet. They may even be apps
that you use on all your devices.

6. Choose one of these apps and circle it.
Which one of these apps do you use daily or which
one do you feel passionately about? Do you use an
app that has changed the way you do something for
the better?

7. Make a list of the benefits.
Try to think about three benefits you have gained by
using this app.

8. Now it’s time to make a video, but before you begin,

9. Some Guidelines
1. Keep the video under 5 minutes
2. Share a few benefits of why you like the app
3. Maybe share a specific feature
4. Use your tablet/phone or other useful props

10. Instructions for Recording a Video on your Mac
1. Open Quicktime Player
2. Click File > New Movie Recording
3. Press the red record button when ready to begin

4. When done recording, press the stop button
5. Click File > Export > 720p
6. Name the file and place it on your desktop or
somewhere you can find it
