2. A lot of disappointed faces were discernible at the recently concluded World Wide Developers Convention
(WWDC) 2012 when no mention of the iPhone 5 was made, especially since most of those in attendance were
among the legions ready to sell their old iPhonesand switch to the iPhone 5 once it comes out. However, said
faces were quickly tempered and frowns were turned right-side-up when the iOS 6 was presented on the floor.
After all, it’s the mobile operating system which will largely define what the new iteration of the iPhone will be
capable of, and what it is capable of is quite a lot.
Two rather nifty features of the new OS are the new Maps app and
a very much improved Siri. With Maps, Apple finally does away with
Google integration and instead opts for a program built from the
ground up, allowing them greater customization and better
utilization of program features. To compete with Google Maps,
Apple has pulled all the stops in their navigation app, integrating all
the expected functions like accurate map detailing, along with a
real-time updating on traffic conditions. It even shows if accidents
have happened on your route, and maps out alternative routes for
you to reach your destination as quickly as possible.
Even niftier is Maps’ “turn-by-turn navigation” feature, which as the name suggests, turns the onscreen map
around relative to the user’s position. That is, if you look to the west, Maps adjust accordingly, eliminating the
need to gather your bearings every time you need directions to some place.

3. The Maps feature which stole the show, however, was the Flyover mode, which is basically a Superman’s-eye
view of certain locations. It is a 3D rendering of a city which shows you a close approximation of how buildings
and areas look and how far apart they are spaced from each other. Even better, the feature allows you to
zoom in and out, and fly over and through the rendering, to give you a better orientation of your destination’s
surroundings.
Indeed, Maps looks to give Google’s program a run for its money; but theiOS 6 feature which is sure to
encourage mass old iPhone trade ins is the new and improved Siri. She has the expected increase in linguistic
function, having gathered more than enough organic data during her beta stage stint with the iPhone 4S.
Along with this, her virtual assistant function has also been expanded. Users are now able to access other apps
without having to browse back and forth between them. They can simply tell Siri what they need done (tweet
messages, update Facebook status, notify of updates, etc.), and she will see to it immediately. This is a further
implementation of Apple’s centralization edict which they introduced with the iOS 5 and the iCloud.Siri is now
getting in the act by having an iGadget’s apps accessible through her.
The iOS 6 is looking to further streamline the Applegadget experience; and with portable gadgets where
streamlining is a defining characteristic, this gives Apple a leg up on the competition. I don’t know about you,
but despite the absence of iPhone 5 news, the iOS 6 announcement has more than whet my appetite to
sell my laptopjust to have iPhone5 or to sell my old iPhone and replace it arrives.
