4. Comparing music video
My music video Lana del ray – summer
time sadness
The video that I would compare my music video with is Lana del ray summer time
sadness. This is because both songs are in the indie genre. Lana del rays video
has elements nature and so does mine. The difference between the two videos is
that my videos has more singing. The Lana del ray song is trying to tell a story
throughout the video.
5. Mise-en-scene ( music video)
The way I used Mise-en-scene throughout my video is by having an appropriate location for my
filming. My location of choice was Beverly Westwood, I felt that this was appropriate because it
fit the narrative of my music video. When I filmed my video the first time round It was November,
therefore it was mid autumn so the colours were very vibrant and appealing. The second and
third time I went was February, so there were no leaves on the trees and the colours seemed
very dull. However I worked with what I had and I believe that it helped quite a lot with the
narrative of my music video. The two contrasts in colours worked really well together as they
were polar opposites making it easy to differentiate between the two seasons. Throughout my
whole video I used natural lighting. This worked well for me because when the sun came out it
made the colours in the videos stand out as vibrant as the possibly could. This helped a lot with
the colour of my video. I had no intention of using props throughout my video but when I started
filming, I saw things that would work well in my video. For example the rope swing that is
included, we found this when we were looking for a place to film within the woods/forest.
I believe over all I used the correct Mise-en-scene for my music video genre as there is no wild
colours or props within it, it is all simple but effective and that’s mainly what music videos are like
in the Indie pop genre.
6. Sound (music video)
The only sound I used was the actual track of the song I used. The sound conventions
of a music video is to have diegetic sounds to help create and develop the narrative.
The way that the conventions are used for sound is the dialogue may be used at the
beginning or end of the music video. This would be used to explain the story further.
In my video I have only used the original track. However at the beginning of the song
there is hear beats that you can hear very slightly. These heart beats will be diegetic
sound meaning that they are added for special effect.
7. Cinematography (music video)
Cinematography includes different shot types, camera angles and camera movements. The
different types of shots that are used within a music video can make the video more appealing.
Close ups are used to express the artists feelings towards the situation. The shot types I used
were close ups, long shots and medium close ups. These shots give meanings for each different
type of shot. The close ups in my video are classed as the main focus, because the close up parts
are when my artist is singing and I've got the camera frame fixed on her. I have quite a few long
shots within my video because I wanted to capture the surroundings as well as the actual artist,
and because my artist wasn’t singing during the shots at Beverly Westwood I felt as though the
close ups were not going to allow me to show a lot of the surrounding area. There are also some
medium close ups, these allowed me to focus in on something for example the shot where there
is daffodils in shot and my artists is walking past. Camera movements are most common within
music videos because they are easy to go along with the beat of the song. The camera
movements I have used in my music video is a pan and tracks. These movements of the camera
add more dimension to the video rather than having something stuck on a tripod all the time. I
also used hand held camera movements, even thought you cant really tell, it still gives it the
better look than having a fixed shot. The conventions of cinematography for the indie pop genre
is to have lots of establishing and long shots. They also have different camera movements such
as hand held cameras and tilts/pans. These are common conventions for the indie pop genre
because they add more character to the video.
8. Ancillary products
Just like my music video I had to complete a large amount of research
in order to create a product that I liked and was the right content for
my genre. This meant that I needed to research the different forms
and conventions of the indie pop genre for a Digi Pak and a album
advertisement. Although at first I researched into the conventions for a
website as that is what ancillary text I was doing. I wanted to add
continuity through all three of my products as this is was you usually
see when you look at a artist variations of products. I used screen
captures of my video in order to keep the continuity. I believe that
having the flow of all three products is much better as it makes the
audience not feel all over the place. Also having the continuity
throughout the product s shows that the artist knows what they are
doing and are organised because having a miss match of products does
not look good for the indie genre as it looks messy.
9. Font and font placement
The font I have used on both of my ancillary texts are the same, I wanted to
keep the continuity flowing throughout. This font is easy to read and under
stand therefore I thought that I would be best. I first thought of an idea of
having calligraphy style writing, I had created my Digi Pak with this style of
writing but it was hard to read and understand so I though that it wouldn’t be
the best choice of writing. I used the same font on my album advertisement
so it flows. The placement of my font on my Digi Pak and album
advertisement was placed in the middle. I feel this is the best place for the
title/ artist name because it is the first thing that people will see when they
are looking at the Digi Pak and advertisement.
10. Colour
The colour of my Digi Pak and album advertisement is the same. I made sure
that I used the exact colours for my Digi Pak and album advertisement. I did
this by choosing the colour of the Digi Pak that I wanted. I then used the
colour picker on Photoshop to pick the exact same colour for my album
advertisement. The colours fit well with my music video as the colours I have
chosen are very autumn/spring.
11. Framing and camera shot
The framing I have used on my album advertisement is a medium long shot.
This is allows me to capture the whole of my artist, I have placed a box
around both, album advertisement and digipak. This just added more
dimension to the photo rather than just having a simple photon the front. I
also believe that it makes you focus on the image that’s in the middle more,
which for my album advertisement is good because my artists is placed in the
middle therefore that is the first thing you notice.
