3. Sports medicine is not described as such in ancient
or modern medicine.
Sports medicine is nothing but the application of
various medical principles to the sports activities,
physical exercise and performance endeavours.

4. Relevance of the Topic
• About 30% population of India are engaged in various
sports
• 60% sportsmen sustain various injuries in field.
• 30% of the above are rendered are permanently unfit for
further sports life.
• Moreover rest are not fit in the true sense with existing
treatment.
5. Ayurveda Interpretation of
sports:
• Ayurveda as a sports medicine is a relatively New concept.
Although ancient India relied upon this system to treat and
maintain the well being of its warrior folk
• The long-term effects of overdoing sport are especially
unhealthy: Your body loses its balance and its resources are
depleted.
6. Concepts of sports injuries and their management can be
spotted in the Ayurvedic Samhitas like –
Bhagna (fractures & dislocations),
Sadyovrana (acute wounds) etc.
Snayugata Vaata (Tendon & Ligament injury, Nerve &
Bursa injuries)

10. Prakritisthaapana:
To regain physical fitness of a sports person and send him
back to the field as early as possible by protection, rest,
medication and physiotherapy.
11. Internal Medication: To boost up tissue healing,
To alleviate pain,
To strengthen the injured part.
These are also recommended for oral therapy in addition to the external
applications.

15. Kati vasti
• It is very effective in low back pain, muscular
pain and fatigue syndrome.
16. Bandhana
• Bandage with or without oil massage. 15 types
of Vrana Bandhana are described in Ayurveda
17. Anushastra Karma
• These include Para Surgical Procedures
including Agni karma (direct heat application)
and Raktamokshana: (Blood Letting
Therapy). Both reduce inflammation, alleviate
pain and promote healing.
18. Food and Drinks
• Freshly prepared food and beverages are good for
fitness.
• Regular meal times are pleasant for the body and
allow it to digest food perfectly.
19. Rasayanas
• Amla juice has been designated as sport Rasayana for physically
active person. It has holistically nourishing and balancing as
well as a natural anabolic (muscle building) effect.
20. Yoga-Asana:
• Yoga -asana are sequentially coordinated postures
that will not only increase flexibility, but also
improve the mind-body coordination
21. Relaxation = Regeneration
After exercise, a sufficient regeneration period
is as important as the sport itself.

stressed limbs and joints

• The Ayurveda can be effectively incorporated in all the fields of
sports beginning from training to the treatment. The curriculum
of the sports training can be effectively modified by including
the Ayurvedic concepts of healthy living by following the
regime
