1. Introduction
 An open syringe pump is a small infusion pump (some include infuse and withdraw
capability), used to gradually administer small amounts of fluid (with or without
medication) to a patient or for use in chemical and biomedical research.
 A syringe pump pushes out small, accurate amounts of liquid. The application space is
huge, from medical applications to food engineering! They're also extremely useful in
biological research.
 Syringe pump are also useful for delivering IV medications over several minutes. In the
case of a medication which should be slowly pushed in over the course of several
minutes, this device saves staff time and reduces errors.

2. Why we have selected this project?
 We wanted to do something different from others, this pump has been recently made
open source and it is sold at very high cost so this is a step to show that this component
can be made easily at low cost and help in research of small laboratory and hospital
which cannot afford it.
 As technology is advancing day by day it is making life easier and one of the rapid
growing sector is bioscience.
 This pump has wide application in Bio-Science and also for patients.

3. Design and Calculation of Project

Steps of stepper motor = 100 step/rev

5. Working
Open syringe pump works on simple principle it converts rotary motion of motor to
reciprocating motion of syringe piston.
As the control unit gives command to Arduino Uno, the Arduino Uno sends instruction to
stepper motor and the stepper motor rotate according to motion required based on
calculation we can find how much fluid will be drawn out and rotation of motor. After that
because of rotary motion of motor the lead screw rotates and nut attached to it pushes the
sliding block.
The Syringe piston is attached to sliding block and it gets push because of which fluid comes
out.
For Suction of fluid we can reverse the process of rotation.

6. Assembly
 The Base Plate is the main component on which the End Block and Motor stand is
fastened by screw with the help of Drilling operation.
 The sliding rod is attach to End block at one and Motor Stand and lead screw with the
help of coupling and bearing.
 Sliding Block is mounted on sliding rod for smooth and easy movement bush is used.
 Syringe is mounted on end block attached, and syringe piston is attached to nut.
 Control unit and Arduino is kept beside Motor stand.

7. How to Operate: Step by Step
1. Connect Arduino With Laptop via USB Port
2. Connect Adapter with Power Source ( 12 V Power Supply)
3. Press Power Button on Control Board
4. Press On Reset Button
5. Press amount of fluid required
Here the Control Unit has facility of summing up
Example: If 10ml button pressed 2 times the amount of fluid which will flow
10ml x 2 = 20 ml
6. Then Press OK Button

11. Possibility of improvement in Project
 We could have used high torque motor for easy pumping of viscous fluid.
 We have used Lead screw, Ball screw if used would give more accuracy in flow of fluid
 If syringe volume is increased the pump capacity would increase.
 If metal base is used it would be more robust and have good accuracy.

12. Our Experience during the Project
 During working on project we got stuck for material for calculation and that helped
we understood the material and operation to be carried.
 We learn how to utilize scrap, our 70% of project is made from scrap (Minimum
Cost).
 We learned how to co-operate with people and inherit there knowledge.
 It helped us working in team and mutual understanding.
 Project making is the best opportunity for each and every student to increase
individual knowledge & skills.

13. Conclusion
During the making of this project, we have learned the importance of the different
materials and their specific properties. We have understood the importance of planning
and distribution of work among team members and it developed and mutual
understanding between us.
We got a good expose of practical work for making An Open syringe pump and learned so
many things how to make it physically.
The project gave the knowledge of how to apply theoretical part in to the practical work or
in real life example. Also we were able to develop problem solving skills through
brainstorming or teamwork so to successfully complete our project.
And we got some idea about computer programming for Arduino circuit.
And in this growing world accuracy is given more value than precision and our project is
totally based on Accuracy.
We know that it would be very beneficial for our future life.

Introduction  An open syringe pump is a small infusion pump (some include infuse and withdraw capability), used to gradually administer small amounts of fluid (with or without medication) to a patient or for use in chemical and biomedical research.  A syringe pump pushes out small, accurate amounts of liquid. The application space is huge, from medical applications to food engineering! They're also extremely useful in biological research.  Syringe pump are also useful for delivering IV medications over several minutes. In the case of a medication which should be slowly pushed in over the course of several minutes, this device saves staff time and reduces errors.

Why we have selected this project?  We wanted to do something different from others, this pump has been recently made open source and it is sold at very high cost so this is a step to show that this component can be made easily at low cost and help in research of small laboratory and hospital which cannot afford it.  As technology is advancing day by day it is making life easier and one of the rapid growing sector is bioscience.  This pump has wide application in Bio-Science and also for patients.

Distance to supply 1ml fluid 1ml = 1cm3 = 1000 mm3 Length x Area = Volume 𝑙 = 1000∗4 𝜋∗(292) L=1.5 mm. 2. Steps to move 1.5 mm = 1.5∗100 1.75 = 85.71 Steps 85.71 Steps to supply 1 ml fluid 3. Flow rate (Q) Speed of stepper motor = 30 rpm Flow rate = Pitch x Speed x Area Q = 1.75 ∗ 30 ∗ 𝜋(29)2 4 = 34677.29 mm3 /sec Flow rate is 34.67 ml/sec

  • 10. 10 | P a g e 5. Working Open syringe pump works on simple principle it converts rotary motion of motor to reciprocating motion of syringe piston. As the control unit gives command to Arduino Uno, the Arduino Uno sends instruction to stepper motor and the stepper motor rotate according to motion required based on calculation we can find how much fluid will be drawn out and rotation of motor. After that because of rotary motion of motor the lead screw rotates and nut attached to it pushes the sliding block. The Syringe piston is attached to sliding block and it gets push because of which fluid comes out. For Suction of fluid we can reverse the process of rotation.

Assembly  The Base Plate is the main component on which the End Block and Motor stand is fastened by screw with the help of Drilling operation.  The sliding rod is attach to End block at one and Motor Stand and lead screw with the help of coupling and bearing.  Sliding Block is mounted on sliding rod for smooth and easy movement bush is used.  Syringe is mounted on end block attached, and syringe piston is attached to nut.  Control unit and Arduino is kept beside Motor stand.
  • 12. 12 | P a g e 7. How to Operate: Step by Step 1. Connect Arduino With Laptop via USB Port 2. Connect Adapter with Power Source ( 12 V Power Supply) 3. Press Power Button on Control Board 4. Press On Reset Button 5. Press amount of fluid required Here the Control Unit has facility of summing up Example: If 10ml button pressed 2 times the amount of fluid which will flow 10ml x 2 = 20 ml 6. Then Press OK Button

Possibility of improvement in Project  We could have used high torque motor for easy pumping of viscous fluid.  We have used Lead screw, Ball screw if used would give more accuracy in flow of fluid  If syringe volume is increased the pump capacity would increase.  If metal base is used it would be more robust and have good accuracy.

Our Experience during the Project  During working on project we got stuck for material for calculation and that helped we understood the material and operation to be carried.  We learn how to utilize scrap, our 70% of project is made from scrap (Minimum Cost).  We learned how to co-operate with people and inherit there knowledge.  It helped us working in team and mutual understanding.  Project making is the best opportunity for each and every student to increase individual knowledge & skills.

We have understood the importance of planning and distribution of work among team members and it developed and mutual understanding between us. We got a good expose of practical work for making An Open syringe pump and learned so many things how to make it physically. The project gave the knowledge of how to apply theoretical part in to the practical work or in real life example. Also we were able to develop problem solving skills through brainstorming or teamwork so to successfully complete our project. And we got some idea about computer programming for Arduino circuit. And in this growing world accuracy is given more value than precision and our project is totally based on Accuracy. We know that it would be very beneficial for our future life.
