The presentation will provide an introduction to GeoServer own authentication and authorization subsystems. We’ll cover the supported authentication protocols, such as from basic/digest authentication and CAS support, check through the various identity providers, such as local config files, database tables and LDAP servers, and how it’s possible to combine the various bits in a single comprehensive authentication tool, as well as providing examples of custom authentication plugins for GeoServer, integrating it in a home grown security architecture. We’ll then move on to authorization, describing the GeoServer pluggable authorization mechanism and comparing it with proxy based solution, and check the built in service and data security system, reviewing its benefits and limitations. Finally we’ll explore the advanced authentication provider, GeoFence, explore the levels on integration with GeoSErver, from the simple and seamless direct integration to the more sophisticated external setup, and see how it can provide GeoServer with complex authorization rules over data and OGC services, taking into account the current user, OGC request and requested layers to enforce spatial filters and alphanumeric filters, attribute selection as well as cropping raster data to areas of interest.

(Guido Schmutz, Trivadis) Kafka Summit SF 2018 Internet of Things use cases are a perfect match for processing with a streaming platform such as Kafka and the Confluent Platform. Some of the questions to be answered are: How do we feed the data from our devices into Kafka? Do we directly send data to Kafka? Is Kafka accessible from outside the organization over the internet? What if we want to use a more specific IoT protocol such as MQTT or CoAP in between? How would we integrate it with Kafka? How can we enrich IoT streaming data with static data sitting in a traditional system? This session will provide answers to these and other questions using a fictitious use case of a trucking company. Trucks are constantly sending data about position and driving habits, which can be used to derive real-time information and actions. A large part of the presentation will be a live demo. The demo will show the implementation of the pipeline incrementally: starting with sending the truck movement events directly to Kafka, then adding MQTT to the sensor data ingestion, followed by using Kafka Streams and KSQL to apply stream processing on the information received. The final pipeline will demonstrate the application of Kafka Connect with MQTT and JDBC source connectors for data ingestion and event stream enrichment, and Kafka Streams and KSQL for stream processing. The key takeaway is the live demonstration of a working end-to-end IoT streaming data ingestion pipeline using Kafka technologies.

With the market grow of Internet of Things the demand for open source home automation software for controlling numerous connected appliances also increases. Open source solutions allow users to customize the setup depending their own specific needs and to manage devices manufactured by different vendors in one place. This presentation will provide an overview of the popular open source tools for home automation and focus on some of the most popular among them: Home Assistant, OpenHAB and Domoticz. We will explore the supported embedded Linux development boards on which these platforms can be installed as well as the IoT with which they can interact out of the box. Practical examples for simple home automation will be provided. The talk is appropriate for open source enthusiasts, makers, engineers, students and even beginners. No previous experience is required.

Retrieval augmented generation (RAG) is the most popular style of large language model application to emerge from 2023. The most basic style of RAG works by vectorizing your data and injecting it into a vector database like Milvus for retrieval to augment the text output generated by an LLM. This is just the beginning. One of the ways that we can extend RAG, and extend AI, is through multilingual use cases. Typical RAG is done in English using embedding models that are trained in English. In this talk, we’ll explore how RAG could work in languages other than English.
