What would the world be like without inclined planes?
Simple Machines
Simple Machines A tool used to make work easier. Simple tools used to make work easier.
Inclined Plane A slanted (angled) plane Permits us to overcome a large resistance by applying a relatively small force to the object.
Wedge A type of inclined plane where we use the pointed edges to do other kinds of work. We use it to push things apart
Screw An inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder. It is another kind of inclined plane. Provides very large mechanical advantage in minimum space
Lever Any tool that pries something loose is a lever. Has an arm that pivots against a fulcrum 3 classes of levers
First Class Lever The fulcrum is located at some point between the effort and resistance arms. Always changes the direction of the force Ex: Scissors, pliers, see saws
2nd Class Lever The resistance is located between the fulcrum and the effort force Does not change the direction of the force Ex: wheel barrow Bottle openers
3rd Class Lever The effort or force is applied between the fulcrum and the resistance force Does not change the direction of the force but produces a gain in speed and distance and decrease in force
Pulley A cord wraps around a wheel. As the wheel rotates, the cord moves in either direction. Use the wheel’s rotation to lower and raise objects.
Wheel and Axle Moves objects across distances. The wheel, turns the axle, causing movement. Allows for easy movement of objects.
