  1. A MOOC is a massive open online course. It freely available online for ‘anyone’ in the world to sign up to. This is a fairly recent development in Open Education Resources – OERs which has taken the form of not just open learning materials but “open teaching”. This is where a course taught online over a period of time is made available through the web. Although the intention is to make education available to the world, obviously to take advantage of this movement you would need money and equipment and access to the internet. MOOCs were also trigged by the rise of social networking and web 2.0 technologies. In 2007 in the United States Open Online courses were being delivered by David Wiley and Alec Couros. Around 2008, Stephen Downes coined the term ‘MOOC’ . He together with George Siemens decided to open up their teaching to ‘take advantage of some of the technologies that were around at the time’.
  2. Open Education was a new platform which was also powered by Blackboard. It is a free, supported platform. As Middlesex University has a Blackboard contract we looked at the possibility of hosting the MOOC through open education.
