2. Food Web
 A food web consists of many food chains.
 A food web shows many different paths that connect plants and animals. A
food web is many food chains connected.
 A food chain only follows one path of an animal finding food.
 There are two types of food chains:
 Aquatic and terrestrial
 Aquatic = water
 Terrestrial = land

3. What is in a Food Chain?
 Producers
 Consumers
 Decomposers

4. Producers and Where are they located
on the food chain?
 Producers make their own food from abiotic compounds.
 Green plants use energy from the sun to make their own food.
 They are located on the bottom of the food chain.
 It takes a lot of producers at the bottom of the pyramid to support the
organisms above them.
 Example: Green plants and algae

5. Consumers
 Consumers are organisms that feed
on other organisms or organic
matter because they cannot
produce their own food.
 Depend upon food provided
directly or indirectly by producers.
 There are 3 levels of consumers
 Primary Consumers
 Secondary Consumers
 Tertiary Consumers

6. Trophic Level
 Organisms place in a food chain
 Trophic relationships are expressed as a pyramid
 First Trophic Level=Primary Producer
 Second Trophic Level=Primary Consumer
 Third Trophic Level=Secondary Consumer
 Fourth Trophic Level=Tertiary Consumer

8. Primary Consumers
 Plant Eaters
 Example: Rabbit eating grass

9. Secondary Consumers
 Carnivores-Meat Eaters
 Animals that eat herbivores
 There are few top carnivores (e.g.
eagles, hawks, tigers, sharks).
 Top carnivores are the first to
suffer when the ecosystem is
disrupted.
 These species are vulnerable to
extinction.
 Example: Snake that eats rabbits

10. Tertiary Consumers
 An organism that feeds on
secondary consumers.
 Example: A hawk that eats owls

11. Human Interference
 Habitat disruption or degradation disrupts primary productivity.
 Humans are at the top of the pyramid and become vulnerable whenever lower
trophic levels decrease.
 The ability to grow green plants limits the number of consumers.
