The legacy of Portugal cultural
heritage
3. Fado can’t be seen or heard; it
simply happens
The word Fado comes from the Latin
word fadum , meaning ‘destiny’. It is a
type of popular Portuguese music (and
literacy) that originated in 1840. It is
usually accompanied by the classical
Portuguese guitar. The lyrics and the
themes belong to a poetic universe
that describes the national identity,
including elements of the cities Lisbon
and Coimbra, popular traditions, it's
people, and themes of the sea.
Fado is characterized as being a
melancholic musical style. It's
main theme is saudade, a
profound nostalgic feeling of
longing and yearning for love, for
one’s homeland, or a past that
will never be recovered.
4. Manueline Architecture
This unique Portuguese architectural style, has its origins in the 16th century,
during the reign of Manuel I. The Manueline architecture is heavily influenced by
the Portuguese discovery age, from the cost of Africa, to Brazil, the Far East and
East India. The aim was to display the discoveries made and items brought back
by the discoverers, Vasco da Gama and Pedro Alvares Cabral. This style
incorporates maritime elements with late gothic architecture and Flemish
influences. Two stunning representations of Manueline architecture can be
found at the Tower of Belém and at the Jerónimos Monestry.
5. National Coach Museum
The National Coach Museum owns
the world’s finest collection of
ceremonial and promenade
vehicles from the 16th to the 19th
century. Mostly originating from
the Portuguese Royal House, it
also includes vehicles from the
Church and private collections.
This excellent collection enables
visitors to understand the
technical and artistic evolution of
animal-drawn transportation used
by European courts before the
advent of the automobile. The
new extension of the builing
exbibits 70 vehicles, being the
newest addition to the collection.
6. Vineyard and Codfish
The history of the wine and codfish (or
bacalhau) has great historically
importance as they were considered a
symbol of power and culture. During
the age of the discoveries, caravels
were the means of transport for the
wine and codfish. The codfish would be
covered in salt in order to preserve it
and can last up to three months. With
increasing trade between Portugal and
England, in 1756 the Porto wine
became so famous and important in
trade that created the world’s first
demarcated region, the Alto Douro
region. Equally important as the codfish
in Portugal, it became the most
popular base commodity in Portuguese
cuisine, being included in over 100
thousand recipe's.
