8. What are we doing about it?
Occupational Analysis helped shape Workforce
Strategy in Advanced Manufacturing
Regional job growth rate is 3% versus -2% for U.S.
• Montgomery County investment in Composite
Training was a boost to local companies and to
the National Composite Center in Kettering.

9. Economic Development helped shape
Workforce Strategy for
Transportation and Logistics
• Montgomery County works on expanding the
transportation and logistics industry.
• The County worked with higher ed toward a
supply chain education pathway.
o The region now has an associate’s degree that transfers
into a bachelor’s program, to a master’s program.
o The County now hosts Caterpillar and Payless Distribution
Center. Combined, these two centers provide about 900
jobs in the region.

10. Summary
The Trends:
•Well-paying jobs require more education.
•More advanced degrees = lower unemployment rates.
The Challenges:
•Many low income young adults are not graduating with degrees.
•Career guidance used to be laid out by large employers; now it’s
done haphazardly.
•In this fast-paced economy, it is hard for employers to forecast job
needs and to give higher ed the lead-time to respond.
Innovation:
•Employer driven workforce development, in partnership with
business development professionals, pays dividends to the region.
