It then describes the rules that when adding a negative and positive number, the negative number is subtracted from the positive number, and when adding two positives or two negatives, you simply combine the numbers without changing signs. If you have negative 2 plus positive 5 it equals positive 3 , because when you add
negative 2 it takes 2 away from five. So it equals positive 3.

If you have positive 6 plus positive 8 it equals positive 14,beacause there are no
negative numbers.
