πόκρυφα, which meansἀ those having been
hidden away. The general term is usually
applied to the books that were considered by
the Church as useful, but not divinely inspired.

Canon). They are valuable as forming a link

Apocrypha. They are frequently printed along
with the canonical scriptures. The Roman

Macc., and the additions to Daniel and Esther.
Besides these books, there are other Jewish
apocryphal writings. The chief are the Psalms of

The so-called lost books of the
Bible are those documents that are
mentioned in the Bible in such a
way that it is evident they were
considered authentic and valuable,
but that are not found in the Bible
today. Sometimes called missing
scripture, they consist of at least
the following:

Possibly an earlier epistle to the Ephesians (Eph. 3:3);
An epistle to the Church at Laodicea (Col. 4:16);

45. Prophecies of Enoch, known to Jude (Jude 1:14).
The Book of Mormon makes reference to writings
of O.T. times and connection that are not found in
the Bible, the Book of Mormon, or in any other
known source. These writings are of Zenock,
Zenos, and Neum (1 Ne. 19:10; Alma 33:3–17).
An extensive prophecy by Joseph in Egypt (which
is not in the Bible) is also apparent from 2 Ne. 3:4–
22, and a prophecy of Jacob (not found in the
Bible) is given in Alma 46:24–26. These writings
were evidently contained on the plates of brass
spoken of in the Book of Mormon (1 Ne. 5:10–13).

48. Pseudepigrapha are falsely attributed works, texts
whose claimed authorship is unfounded; a work,
simply, "whose real author attributed it to a figure
of the past."[1]
The word "pseudepigrapha" (from the
Greek: ψευδής, pseudēs, "false" and πιγραφή,ἐ
epigraphē, "inscription";
The Book of Enoch is an example of a
pseudepigraph; no Hebrew scholars would ascribe
its authorship to Enoch,

49. The term gnostic gospels refers to gnostic
collections of writings about the teachings of
Jesus, written from the 2nd - 4th century AD.[1]
These gospels are not accepted by most
mainstream Christians as part of the standard
Biblical canon. Rather, they are part of what is
called the New Testament apocrypha

52. Nag Hammadi is best known for being the site
where local farmers found a sealed earthenware
jar containing thirteen leather-bound papyrus
codices, together with pages torn from another
book, in December 1945. The farmers burned
one of the books and parts of a second
(including its cover). Thus twelve of these books
(one missing its cover) and the loose pages
survive[1]
. The writings in these codices, dating
back to the 2nd century AD,[2]
comprised 52
mostly Gnostic tractates (treatises)

56. Non canonical books are texts of uncertain
authenticity, or writings where the work is
seriously questioned. Given that different
denominations have different ideas about what
constitutes canonical scripture, there are
several different versions of the apocrypha

59. The Dead Sea scrolls consist of about 900
documents, including texts from the
Hebrew Bible, discovered between 1947 and
1956 in eleven caves in and around the
Qumran Wadi near the ruins of the ancient
settlement of Khirbet Qumran, on the
northwest shore of the Dead Sea.
The texts are of great religious and historical
significance, as they include some of the only
known surviving copies of Biblical documents
made before 100 B.C.

into three groups: "Biblical" manuscripts
(copies of texts from the Hebrew Bible), which
comprise roughly 40% of the identified scrolls;
"Apocryphal" or "Pseudepigraphical"

In June of 1878 the David Whitmer home was
badly damaged by a tornado. The local paper
stated: "Language is too poor to adequately
describe the desolation and ruin of Richmond.
Within a few moments, a third of the town was
made desolate. Five hundred persons made
homeless with many of them left penniless.
Richmond is in grief and mourning.

mementos, was turned over on April 18, 1903,
to the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints
[now known as the Community of Christ], at Independence,

80. Soon after the Church was organized on 6 April
1830, the Lord commanded the Prophet Joseph
Smith to begin an inspired translation, or
revision, of the King James Version of the
Bible. Today this inspired revision, which the
Prophet worked on until the time of his death, is
known as the Joseph Smith Translation. The
Prophet Joseph Smith restored to the Bible
“many parts which are plain and most precious;
and also many covenants of the Lord [which
were] taken away”

On 3 July 1835 a man named Michael Chandler brought
four Egyptian mummies and several papyrus scrolls of
ancient Egyptian writings to Kirtland, Ohio. The
mummies and papyri had been discovered in Egypt several
years earlier by Antonio Lebolo. Kirtland was one of many
stops in the eastern United States for Chandler’s
mummy exhibition. Chandler was offering the mummies
and rolls of papyrus for sale and, at the urging of the
Prophet Joseph Smith, several members of the Church
donated money to purchase them. In a statement dated 5
July 1835, Joseph Smith, declaring the importance of these
ancient Egyptian writings, recorded:

Upon the subject of the Egyptian records, or rather
the writings of Abraham and Joseph, I may say a
few words. This record is beautifully written on
papyrus with black, and a small part, red ink or
paint, in perfect preservation. The characters are
such as you find upon the coffins of mummies,
hieroglyphics, &c. with many characters or letters
exactly like the present, (although probably not
quite so square,) form of the Hebrew without
points.

These records were obtained from one of the
catacombs in Egypt, near the place where once
stood the renowned city of Thebes, by the
celebrated French traveller Antonio Lebolo, in the
year 1831. He procured license from Mehemet
Ali, then Viceroy of Egypt, under the protection of
Chevalier Drovetti, the French Consul, in the year
1828; employed 433 men four months and two
days, (if I understand correctly, Egyptian or
Turkish soldiers,) at from four to six cents per
diem, each man; entered the catacomb June 7th,
1831, and obtained eleven mummies.

first order, and deposited and placed in niches, and
two or three hundred after the second and third

Furthermore, the Book of Mormon teaches that all of these
groups will have the writings of the others (see 2 Nephi
29:13).

135. New Writings will come forth…
We conclude from this that the Lord will
eventually cause the inspired teachings He has
given to His children in various nations to be
brought forth for the benefit of all people. This
will include accounts of the visit of the resurrected
Lord to what we call the lost tribes of Israel and
His revelations to all the seed of Abraham. The
finding of the Dead Sea Scrolls shows one way
this can occur.

When new writings come forth—andWhen new writings come forth—and

As the Lord said through a prophet in that
book, "And because that I have spoken one
word ye need not suppose that I cannot
speak another; for my work is not yet
finished; neither shall it be until the end of
man" (2 Nephi 29:9).

138. New Writings will come forth…
Truly, the gospel is for all men everywhere—every nation,
every people. All are invited.
We live in the day foretold when righteousness is sent
down out of heaven and truth out of the earth "to sweep the
earth as with a flood," and to gather out the elect "from the
four quarters of the earth" (Moses 7:62). The Book of
Mormon has come forth to remind us of the covenants of
the Lord, to the convincing of all "that Jesus is the Christ,
the Eternal God, manifesting himself unto all nations"
(Book of Mormon title page). I add this, my testimony of
Him and His mission, in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

139. 45 ¶ Again, the kingdom of heaven is like
unto a merchant man, seeking goodly
pearls:
46 Who, when he had found one pearl of
great price, went and sold all that he had,
and bought it
(New Testament | Matthew 13:45 - 46)

142. In 1851 there were over 32,000 members of the
Church in England. Elder Franklin D. Richards,
a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles
…published a compilation of several revelations
and texts of scripture by the Prophet Joseph
Smith and called this collection the Pearl of
Great Price. He said it would be “a source of
much instruction and edification to many
thousands of the Saints, who will by an
acquaintance with its precious contents, be more
abundantly qualified to set forth and defend the
principles of our Holy Faith before all men”
(Millennial Star, 15 July 1851, 217).

143. On 10 October 1880, by action of the First
Presidency and the general conference, the Pearl
of Great Price became a standard work of the
Church. “Several revisions have been made in
the contents as the needs of the Church have
required.
In 1878 portions of the Book of Moses not
contained in the first edition were added.

144. 1902 certain parts of the Pearl of Great Price
that duplicated material also published in the
Doctrine and Covenants were omitted. . . .
[In 1976] two items of revelation were added.
In 1979 these two items were removed from the
Pearl of Great Price and placed in the Doctrine
and Covenants, where they now appear as
