Prairie View women top Alabama St.
1. Prairie View women top Alabama St.
Three days into the SWAC tournament, the Prairie View A&M women finally got on the court at
Toyota Center on Thursday. They won't be a one-and-done.
Behind the guard play of Jeanette Jackson and LaReahn Washington, fourth-seed Prairie View
defeated Alabama State 71-61 to advance to Friday's 6 p.m. semifinal and a date with top-seed
Southern University.
"They don't want to stop playing," said Lady Panthers coach Dawn Brown. "They want to keep
playing in the tournament."
Prairie View (12-17) has won the last three women's SWAC tournament championships and on
Thursday played like they could contend for another title.
After fifth seed Alabama State (16-14) tied the game at 47 with 10:26 remaining in the game on a
layup by Daniele Ewert, the Lady Panthers took control. Two made free throws by Jackson gave
Prairie View the lead for good at 49-47.
From there the Lady Panthers made the plays they needed down the stretch.
"It was a great collective win," said Brown. "Lately we've been getting more than two players
involved in our offense."
