Scoring Goals is a project that utilises sport to connect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to a career in Health and Physical Education teaching. This collaborative project utilises four sport-related programs to promote and recruit Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people into the UQ Bachelor of Health, Sport and Physical Education (BHSPE). Presentation at MATSITI #OurMobTeach Conference, 1 October 2015

- Scoring Goals uses sport as the vehicle to encourage young people to consider HPE teaching as a career option We have 4 key programs… but will concentrate on IYSP and Pathways for this short presentation. If asked: School-based traineeships – with Institute of Urban Indigenous Health (IUIH) certificate 3 in Allied Health, and Cert 3 in Fitness School scholarship programs – ‘light touch’ from us; private school scholarships
- If use video link in IYSP logo: Start at 4mins SUCCESSES IYSP was created to bring students (10-16 years old) to UQ to get a taste of uni life and aspire to higher education IYSP is annually hosted at HMNS in January In 2015, 200 young people and 100 staff were involved CHALLENGES and FUTURE Despite best intentions, IYSP has become a social holiday program that happened to occur at UQ. It has been identified that the program needs redesigning Unfortunately, staffing issues for 2016 means that IYSP will go into hibernation and a focus onto Pathways for Success program
- SUCCESS New program: In only 2 terms, the Pathways to Success program is engaging with young people in Grades 7-9 at 7 schools. The school-based tutoring component is staffed by UQ pre-service teachers Pathways program focusses on study and life skills, leadership and culture and identity, and helps students consider tertiary study as a real and achievable option… seeing the pathway, planning, how to get help to achieve it. This includes visits to UQ campus with strives to break down taboos and rumours about tertiary study. Rewards for attendance and behaviour: Students receive a shirt, trips to Broncos games and Dreamworld, and a celebratory gala dinner. Camps are also a reward Leadership camp for 150 students who have successfully completed the school program. Held on Gold Coast in December. Regional camp for 60 students from the Wide Bay area (Toowoomba, Cherbourg/Murgon, Gympie, Bundaberg, Maryborough, etc). Held in Bundaberg in December Also InspireU –residential camps for Grades 11 and 12 in school holidays. Held at UQ Brisbane in Engineering, Law, Health Sciences and Science (which is on now) Another success is that pre-service teachers (UQ students) act as tutors, mentors and ambassadors for these programs. FUTURE As mentioned, IYSP will take a break but the Pathways programs are where we are putting our efforts but there are a couple of challenges. CHALLENGE (i) Trying to connect with families (ii) Overcoming CECs (Community Education Counsellors) concerns about equity – CECs are worried about those not attending.
- - UQ College’s Tertiary Preparation Program - Pathway programs for entry to higher education as well as direct entry into tertiary studies and degrees. designed to develop students to a year 12 equivalent level and is targeted to students who may need additional academic development, a new start or an opportunity to improve their career and/or personal position.
- WHERE TO FROM HERE? PRESENCE Today is the Murri Carnival. 35 000 people are expected to participate; many will be young people. We have UQ student ambassadors in a UQ Tent to have a chat about UQ Also U16s and U18s Queensland sides will have training camp at UQ in Nov (includes cultural visit to Cherbourg) T-shirts, flyers, wristbands SUPPORT School student: Come to understand the importance of a face (someone to contact when need help); not just information about ‘how to apply’. Achieving this by making current pre-service teachers aware and can act as a ‘graduate army’. Connecting with families important here too Uni student: Making uni navigatable; HMNS support – Facebook group to face-to-face group; connect with ATSIS Unit These will both continue beyond the life of MATSITI funds LEGACY videos CHALLENGE Measurable success – not sure of the impact; too soon to know if programs targeting Grades 7-9 have university outcomes
