It’s your turn to try it out…… You will be given a sample of collected data from a Classroom Response System. Although this was a Yes or No question, the responses included the level of confidence the students had in their answer. Once you are finished looking at the data from the formative assessment, how would you proceed with the lesson? ,[object Object]

  1. Welcome to the presentation about SMART technology in the classroom. The SMART company has been very involved in Educational Technology in the classroom and we are going to show you some of the great tools available.
  2. Do any of this ring a bell?
  3. Technology has certainly advanced exponentially and SMART has been one of the leaders in the classroom. We have 2 goals and objectives for today. The first is to introduce and explain the various SMART technologies. The 2nd is to show how these resources can be used in a high school setting. Specifically we will be focusing on the SMART Airliner Slate and the Classroom Response System.
  4. The most important aspect of incorporating new technology in my opinion is letting go of the fear. When technology was first introduced with something as simple as a mouse- which we have mastered now- the fear was there.CLICK New technology has been created to make our lives easier and we must turn that fear into motivation to learn and incorporate the new technology to create interactive and engaging classroomsCLICK
  5. As mentioned earlier, the products we are discussing are more relevant to a high school setting, so although when you think SMART, smartboards come to mind, they are not as dominant in secondary schools. The first product {CLICK} is the SMART Airliner which comes with its pre-installed Notebook software. The 2nd product is {CLICK} the SMART Classroom Response System.
  6. When we think of an airliner, we tend to overwhelm ourselves with its capabilities. The truth of the matter is that a slate is simply a very sophisticated and portable mouse. If we look at a mouse (CLICK), there are 2 main actions it can take. You can right-click button (CLICK) which opens up various menus based on the application that is running, and the left-click button (CLICK) which is the selection tool. You are currently using a mouse to go through this powerpoint, so it is a fairly simple tool.SLIDE
  7. The SMART airliner is similar to the mouse although it looks much more complicated. There are 3 main difference with this SlateIt is wireless and portable- This really allows the classroom to be more engaged because the teacher is able to walk around the interact with different groups of kids.It uses a stylus instead of a track ball or lasers seen at the bottom of computer mice. This stylus also gives the teacher the power to insert free-hand drawings and diagrams, along with symbols and text to enhance the lesson and the methods in which the instruction is being presented. The 3rd unique feature about the Airliner is its quick menu buttons. This is my slate and the menu that I created, but each can be customized adding their own tools. Some of the tools that I have include a spotlight, a magic pen, and a line drawing tool that I use in Geometry.
  8. The software is also very useful. The basics include the view options that can allow you to have a split screen to show the processes and the steps that are involved. (CLICK)There are writing tools with various thickness and color and different designs and a magic pen that allows you to zoom in and spotlight different parts of the screen. (CLICK)Anther useful part of the software is the gallery that SMART provides you with including lesson plans, various pictures such as graphs, and interactive tools such as a ruler and protractor to show students how to correctly use such tools.
  9. The software acts like a blank canvas that you can enter notes on via typing, or free-writing using your stylus.A great feature is the ability to import presentations that you have already created so there is no need to re-invent the wheel. As mentioned earlier, the built-in Gallery is a great tool including items such as graphics, pictures, interactive tools, and lesson plans. Please be sure to click on the link to be re-directed to a video of an interactive pre-loaded activity about lung structure. As you can see, although a fairly simple example, there are more complex tools. They allow students to be more engaged and absorb more information. There are also lesson plans that are pre-made lined up with state standards to run through with children.
  10. The other SMART tool that is helpful in the classroom is the Classroom Response System. These have certainly come a long way, but students will learn how to use them almost instinctively.(CLICK)They use the SMART software that was explained on the last few pages. (CLICK)The software itself allows you to import you current classroom with your student information whether its form your electric grade book or from the attendance recording system the school has. (CLICK)The tool has an easy navigation menu to create tests or to easily import already created tests. As you can see, SMART technologies do their best to make integrating this technology as simple and as seamless as possible of a transition. The reason why this tool is so simple to ease is due to its resemblance to a cell phone (CLICK)The newest Classroom Response Systems have keyboards that allow entry of not only multiple choice questions, but students can type in short answers and fill-in –the blank answers. For math, this makes it better because a teacher can not only look at the answer, but take a quick glance and how it was solved to assess how much the class is learning and create a needs assessment for the learning of new material.
  11. They are capable for almost all subjects.Answers can be anonymous so you can get a feel for the performance of the overall calss.Students will be more engaged because it is hands on and they can see the class’s responses.
  12. The greatest thing about SMART tools is the immediate feedback we get from students. If there is anything that we need immediately to help guide meaningful education, it’s immediate feedback.(CLICK)The Smart Airliner allows you to create accept/reject programs to let students immediately know correct and incorrect answers.(CLICK)There are jeopardy boards for example that are pre-loaded into the program(CLICK)Pop-Corn problem solving or answer questions is an effective way where students do one step of answer one question with the board in their hand, then they pass it on for someone else to answer another part of the question. (CLICK)The Classroom Response System is very helpful for feedback because it(CLICK)Summarizes student responses(CLICK)Builds in grade book to tract student performance as a class or individuals so we can look for patterns in students as they progress through the material.(CLICK)Export Results which can be helpful for several reasons including collaboration with other colleagues to look at student assessment data. It can also be exported to data books including excel to evaluate and analyze data from different perspectives.
  13. It’s your turn- We will give you a sample question with a YES or NO answer. The teacher also allowed students to choose YES or No and indicate whether they had low or high confidence in their answers. Although most of you might not be familiar with the question, the point of the exercise is to show and stress how great having student data will be. (CLICK)Take a moment to look at data(CLICK)As yourself these questions and take 5-10 seconds to think about each one.(CLICK AFTER 5-10 seconds of each question)
  14. SO ask yourself- what kind of learning environment do we want to create in our classroom?(CLICK-wait til over)(Clikc Again)
  15. SMART technologies could be a great tool of us to create that instructional design that we strive for in our classroom. For more information, please visit their website. We hope you enjoyed our presentation.
