Dialogue
I. Dialogue
A. Commas are used to set off the words of
the speaker from the rest of the sentence
a. ex. “Oh Petey is here to pay me a
visit,” Mr. Masenhimer said, “now don’t
everyone come rushing over to see.”
B. An exclamation point or a question mark
separates the speaker’s words from the rest
of the sentence.
a. ex. “Is that really Petey?” Mr.
Masenhimer asked.
C. The speaker’s exact words are placed
within quotation marks.
a. ex. “We’re happy she’s back, but
she’s not that cool.” Mr. Masenhimer
exclaimed.

start?
2. a. Mom asked, “What time does the
party start?”
B. Ben said Right after supper.
a. Ben said, “Right after supper.”
C. You have to finish your homework first
she reminded him.

E. I’ll be right down he added because I just

A. Indent every time a new person speaks.

Fadi said, “I’ve always like the first Harry
Potter book, so I’ll probably use that.”
“I just read a new book call Hoot,” Renee
said. “That’s what I’m going to report on.”
“I haven’t heard of that book. What’s it
about?” asked Fadi.
“It’s about three kids who help save some
endangered miniature owls. See, this big
company wants to build a pancake house where
the owls’ nest is,” she said.
“When you say, ‘build a pancake house,’ do
you mean they want to build a house out of
pancakes?” Fadi asked.
“Very funny,” said Renee. “I think you
know what I mean. It’s a restaurant that sells
pancakes.”
“And so the kids stop this restaurant from
being built?” Fadi asked.
“I’m not going to tell you,” Renee said.
“You’ll have to read the book yourself if you
want to find out!”

candy for pointing that out.’”
B. “I’m running down the hall, and all of the
sudden I hear, ‘stop running,’ and I immediately

C. Not Capitalizing after the exclamation
point or question mark:
a. “Dude that was the sickest move I’ve
ever seen!” said Sara.
b. “When are your parents coming
home?” asked Adam.
c. “When are your parents coming
home?” Adam asked.

A. Always place periods and commas inside
the quotation marks.
B. Exclamation points and question marks
always go inside the quotation marks when it
punctuates the quotation.
C. Place it outside when it punctuates the
main sentence.
a. Did I hear you say, “Now we can tour
the Smithsonian on the internet”?
5. D. Use quotations to set apart a word that is
being discussed
a. Renny uses the word “like” entirely
too much.
E. Use quotes to indicate slang
a. Holy moly bro, that move was so
“sick.”
b. “Tight” new wheels pops.
c. Wow, that beginning string concert
was super “chill.”
d. What up my “nizzle.”
e. My “peeps” are totally crazy!
F. Use quotes to point out that a word or
phrase is being used in a special way.
a. Mr. Masenhimer, my core teacher,
says he teaches “humanities.”
b. My dad’s car is a “sedan.”
