 In a library.
Poor Study Areas
 In front of TV.
 In your room on bed.

 Are trustworthy.
 Are well-organized.
 Are rarely – if ever – absent.
IMPROVE YOUR MEMORY
 1. Link It
 Connect new ideas to what you already know.
 2. Repeat It
 Repetition helps fix info. In your mind, so recite
the facts aloud or write them down.
 3. Play With It
 Use memory tricks, little sayings that jog your
mind.
IMPROVE YOUR MEMORY
 4. Write It Down
 Write important information on index cards.
 5. Sing It
 Songs stick in our mind because of the rhythm.
 6. Visualize It
 As you study, form a mental picture.
TAKE GREAT NOTES
 1. Write only the important information.
 Main idea
 Important names, dates, numbers
 Key details
 2. Outline and Highlight
 main idea / heading
 people/ events/ categories
 important information under the upper outline
 additional information about the upper outline
TAKE GREAT NOTES
 3. Keep It Brief!
 Come up with an abbreviation system.
 4. Organize Your Notes
 Keep notes in binder, organized by topic with
handouts.
 5. Write Clearly
 Your notes will be useless if you can’t read them.
READ FOR SUCCESS
BE AN EXPLORER
 Try each reading method several times with
different types of texts such as
stories, textbooks, web pages, newspaper
articles.
 You will probably find one or two reading
methods that you like a lot. Stick with them, but
try new ones, too. Don’t get stuck in a reading
rut.
PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT
 Practice these reading techniques 15 to 20
minutes a day. Follow the schedule and you’ll see
progress fast.
 Try reading at the same time every day, in the
same place, so you get into a reading routine.
STICK WITH IT
 Keep a “reading diary” by listing all the different
things you have read. You’ll feel good looking
back at all the fun you had reading.
 Don’t give up! Learning any skill takes time and
effort. But its really worth it.
BE AN ACTIVE READER
 Preview the Text
 Cover
 Title
 Table of contents and subtitles
 Pictures, illustrations, photos, charts, and maps
 Captions
PREVIEW THE COVER
 What clues about the story do I get from the title?
Based on the title what do I think will happen in the
story?
 What clues about the story do I get from the pictures?
Front and Back covers? What will the mood be?
 Who wrote the book? Have you read books by this
author before?

than one meaning?
 Why did the author pick this title?
 By the title, what do you think will happen in the
story?
PREVIEW THE TABLE OF
CONTENTS AND SUBTITLES
 What will this book teach me?
 What main topics does the book cover?
 How are the topics arranged?

 Why were these illustrations included? What
purpose do they serve?
 By the Pictures, what do you think the book will
be about?
PREVIEW THE CAPTIONS
 What facts do I get from the captions?
 By the captions, what does the book describe?
MAKING PREDICTIONS
 WHAT I KNOW + STORY CLUES = PREDICITONS
 Based on what I know and the clues in the
story, what do I think will happen next?
 How accurate are my predictions?
 What new predictions can I make using the facts I
just read?
