We’ve lasted a decade. Now what?
Whose company is it?
It still all revolves too much around me
What am I really needed for?
Injected Turbulence!
What I did:
1. I delegated product design
2. I delegated engineering management
3. I stopped watching the whole wiki
4. I turned off Pivotal Tracker / Trello / Github notifications
5. I left a bunch of Slack channels
Two weeks later…
Eyes shut, ears WIDE open
10% slower, 10% lower quality
Hard to detect, kills you in 2 years
Twitter and Slack Rehab
I have NO IDEA about what people are
doing, or if they’re working at all!
We’re not hierarchical,

but we’re not flat either


Wait a minute: who flies the plane?
There’s A LOT I need to coach!
Ehm…what do I do all day?
I fell off the wagon a couple of times
One month later…
Delegated tasks are going well
Not knowing what people
are doing is fine!
“I can do this for you”

“I’ll help you get it done with coaching,
resources, tools and time”
Some people start stepping up
Clear schedule? Yeah, right!
Most of my meetings are 1-1s
I still set all the salaries
Communication between
teams starts to break down
We need a Product Manager!
Nothing major broke
Two months later…
Something major broke
As the weeks went by…
Frustration
Loneliness
Boredom
Guilt
Curious side-effects…
Itchy feet
More guilt and self-doubt
Infighting
Getting stuff done is my
trusty source of endorphins!
Sleepless nights
Burnout
Tenderized!
I don’t know what I’m doing
