4. Vertebrates
The animals with backbones are divided (classified) into five different
groups or classes: the mammals, fish, amphibians, reptiles, and birds.
5. mammals
• Are endothermic. Also known
as “warm-blooded,”
endothermic animals regulate
their own body temperate
which allows them to live in
almost every climate on Earth.
• Have hair on their bodies.
• Produce milk to feed their
babies. This allows them to
spend more time with their
young and teach them
important skills they need to
survive on their own.
• Have four limbs and less.
Limbs are legs, arms, and
wings.
6. fishes
Fish are alike in three ways:
1. All fish have gills. Gills help
them to breathe in water.
2. All fish have fins. Their tail
fins help them to swim.
3. Fish are cold-blooded.
This means that the body
temperature changes. They
slow down when the water
becomes cold. They move
faster when the water is
warm.

7. amphibians
All amphibians are alike in four ways:
1. All amphibians breathe with gills in water
when they are born, and some breathe with
the lungs on land later.
2. All amphibians have smooth, moist skin.
3. All amphibians lay eggs.
4. All amphibians are cold blooded
8. reptiles
All reptiles are alike in
three ways:
1. All reptiles breathe with
lungs.
2. All reptiles are covered
with dry scales.
3. All reptiles are cold-
blooded.
9. birds
All birds are alike in five
ways:
1. All birds have feathers.
2. All birds have wings.
3. All birds have two legs.
4. All birds breath with
lungs.
5. All birds have bills or
beaks.
15. All invertebrates are alike in five
ways:
1. They have no backbone.
2. They usually have weak
muscles.
3. They usually are small
animals with soft bodies.
4. If they do have skeletons, the
skeletons are on the outside of
their bodies for their strength
and protection.
16. MANY KINDS OF INVERTEBRATES
There are 70, 000 species of vertebrates, but there are over 800,000
species of invertebrates. The world of invertebrates is filled with many
different kinds of animals. Some of them are rare and unusual, and
some of them are common. Some of them are dangerous. All of them
are interesting to look at and read about. Let’s look at some of the
more interesting invertebrates.
18. Octopuses
The octopus has eight
arms that is called
tentacles. On all the
tentacles are tiny
suction cups which the
octopus uses to cling
tightly to whatever it
can catch.
19. Octopuses have an interesting way
of defending themselves. There
are three parts to their defense
system.
1. They can change color to match
their surroundings. That is called
camouflage.
2. They can spray an inky
substance into the water to
confuse their enemy.
3. They can get away by “jet
propulsion”.
20. Starfish
Some of the most
beautiful creatures
of the sea are
starfish.
The body of a starfish is covered with small,
pointed spines. Starfish walk o special
structures called tube feet. They eat clams
which they open with their tube feet.

Hind wings
