TARGET GROUP: 1st year, Scientific high school Liceo Scientifico,
Upper Secondary School
LEVEL: B1
CLASS PROFILE: The class is composed by 20 students: 11 girls (one
from Japan and one from Ukraine) and 9 boys.
Students study English as foreign language and they
all share the same interest in learning English culture.
The social climate in the classroom is lovely and
learners cooperate and work in groups. The foreign
students are well integrated. The students use the
Internet and social networks.
Learners achieve most goals, can express themselves
on a range of topics and can share information on
familiar routine and non – routine matters. They
belong to various social classes: some of them come
from middle classes and the others are from upper
classes.
TIMING: 3 Hours of 60 minutes plus Final Tasks of 1 hour (60
minutes).
THEME: The use of regular and irregular verbs in the Past
Simple, the spelling variations and the negative and
the interrogative forms of the past tense.
STUDY ORGANIZATION: group work, whole class activity, pair work
METHODOLOGICAL
APPROACH:
Communicative Approach- TBL -
Student centered lesson with STT (student talking
time) longer than TTT (teacher talking time).
ASSUMPTIONS: Students are able:
- to use the Past Simple of the verb “to be”
with affirmative, negative and question
forms.
- to use ()utilize the Present Simple?
- to write complete sentences using the Present
Simple and the Past Simple of the verb “to be”.

- to make use of the past time expressions and
connectors.
ANTICIPATED PROBLEMS The students may have some problems in
understanding the difference between regular and
irregular forms of the verbs because they are
different from the Italian ones.
POSSIBLE SOLUTION The teacher, as a guide, helps the learners to clarify
this concept showing the verbs in the video and
giving the students the list of other irregular verbs.
GENERAL OBJECTIVES: - to understand how and when to use the Past
Simple to describe a situation.
- to develop students’ communication
/speaking(toglilo) skills.
- to improve learners’ writing skills.
- to encourage students’ cooperation.
- to enhance learners’ ability to give their
personal impressions on the topic.
- to stimulate students’ involvement and

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: - to form the Past Simple using regular and
irregular verbs.
- to use the affirmative (aggiungi),negative and
the interrogative forms of the past tense.
- to identify the Past Simple in a written and
oral text.
- to express their personal opinions about what
they have studied and share them with the rest
of the class during interactions.
SKILLS DEVELOPMENT: Writing: to write complete sentences using
new vocabulary and new verbs in the Past
Simple.
Listening: to learn new grammar elements
