Hot potatoes lesson plan
1. Daily Lesson Plan
Course: 3rd form
Teachers: Mariana Claure & Viviana Fleitas
Unit: 1- Jobs
Content: baker, builder, cook, dentist, doctor, film director, fireman, policeman, singer & student.
Hours: 2 periods of 40 minutes
Lesson Plan º 1
DATE: June, 2012
WARM-UP: (20’)
Hello song! (Ss should know the Hello song from previous lessons) T & Ss sing the song.
The Miming Game. T divides the class in two groups and asks for two volunteers, one from
each group. T whispers one of the five jobs that were dealt the previous week (builder, baker,
cook, dentist & doctor) to one of these two volunteers. His group should guess which job he is
miming. If they say the appropriate word in a minute they get 2 points. If they say it properly
during the second minute they get 1 point. If they exceed the 2 minutes, there is no point. Do
the same with the other group.
ACTIVITIES: (1h)
1. Introduce film director, fireman, policeman, singer & student. (20’)Show Ss the fireman
flashcard and ask “What’s this?” Ss may say “un bombero” so the T says the word in
English and makes them repeat “Fireman.” Stick the flashcard on the board and ask Ss “What
can a fireman do?” encourage Ss to say “A fireman can put out fires.” And write that sentence
on the board next to the flashcard. Do the same with the rest of the words.
2. Flash the flashcards. (15’) Once they finish copying what is on the board. Take the flashcards
and put them behind your back and slowly reveal one of the flashcards as you say “What’s
this?” encourage Ss to say “Fireman.” Ss should pretend to be a fireman. Continue the same
process with the other jobs. As they get more confident, speed up the process.
3. Computer room & the hot potatoes activities. (15’) Go to the computer room and asks Ss to
play the JQuiz activity. Model the activity by asking Ss “Who can build a house? Can a
policeman build a house? Encourage the children to say “NO.” T: “What can he do?” Ss
should say “A policeman can arrest people.” When the T gets to Builder, she should ask
“Can a builder build a house?” Encourage Ss to say “YES.” T: “Very good! Click builder!”
make them continue with the exercise and check their work by going around the room. Let
them know that it is a five-minute activity. If they exceed the time expected they will problably
get no point.
4. JMatch. (5’) As soon as they complete the JQuiz, T asks Ss to click on the JMatch activity.
Explain that they have to drag and drop each picture on the correct word on the left.
5. Homework. (2’)Before the class finishes, ask the Ss to study all the Job words for next class
since they are going to be tested on Jobs in the computer room. Explain that they are going to
recycle vocabulary and patterns at the very beginning of the class.
6. Bye-bye song! (3’)( Ss should know this song from previous classes)

Hello song! (Ss should know the Hello song from previous lessons) T & Ss sing the song.
The Memo Game. T sticks 5 job flashcards on the sides which have no pictures on the left
board and the other 5 on the right board. Next to each of them there should be a word flashcard.
Each time they match a picture with the appropiate word ask them to make a sentence. As in
the example below:
1. A BAKER CAN MAKE BREAD
1. A BUILDER CAN BUILD A HOUSE.
Note: remember to check spelling since they are going to be tested in some minutes.
