SERVANT LEADERSHIP
• By Robert K. Greenleaf in 1977, and
  Spears in 1995


A servant leader is someone who is servant first, who
   has responsibility to be in the world, and so he
     contributes to the well-being of people and
                      community.
CONCEPT
 The primary responsibility of leaders is to provide service to
  others.

 Taking care of other people’s need is highest priority

 A servant leader looks to the needs of the people and asks
  himself how he can help them to solve problems and promote
  personal development.

 His main focus is on people, because only content and motivated
  people are able to reach their targets and to fulfill the set
  expectations.
10 CHARACTERISTICS:
 LISTENING: a deep commitment to listen intently to others.

 EMPATHY: recognizing and accepting people for their talents and special
  spirit, assume people’s good intentions.

 HEALING: heal their own emotional hurts, and assist the healing of
  others

 AWARENESS: having general and self-awareness which allows
  providing an understanding of issues.

 PERSUASION: convince instead of enforcing, by challenging others to
  think of issues in different perspectives.

 CONCEPTUALIZATION: the ability to think beyond the day-to-day
  realities, and “dream great dreams”. Must find a balance between the
  present and future vision.

 FORESIGHT: understand lessons from the past, realities of the
  present, and the consequence of a decision in the future.

 STEWARDSHIP: corporate institutions have a great role in affecting the
  greater good of society

 COMMITMENT TO GROWTH OF PEOPLE: every individual has an
  intrinsic growth beyond their contributions as workers.

 BUILDING COMMUNITY: seek for means to build a community among
  the ones who work within a given institution
ADVANTAGES
 Focuses on the leader-follower relationship and on the ideal
  of service.
 It is positively related to organizational effectiveness and
  employee satisfaction
 It is a long-term concept that can influence society in a
  positive way
 An exemplary treatment to employees leads to great
  customer service, and high customer loyalty.
 Excellent culture is developed

      DISADVANTAGES
 Few leaders can fulfill the attributes of the 10 characteristics
 Needs a long time to apply
