2. What is Conventions of an
Opening Sequence
The purpose of a films opening sequence is to attract
people to keep on watching the film, and also the
opening sequence is a way for the director to
establish characters and genre.
Roland Barthes published a book called S/Z in 1970
this book has all the information about short story by
Balzac, in the book he argues that almost all
narratives are linked with multiple codes.

The Dark Night:
The importance of using a production logo is to
reassure the audience that the movie will be up
to standard or better, In the dark knight we see
DC Comics, Warner Bros, Legendary Pictures &
Syncopy Films as the production logos that come
up in the beginning which helps comfort
audience since they know these brands and trust
them.
4. Title of film
The Dark Night:
The title of this film is very well known as its based
on a comic book and has previous movies which
have been successful, the brand Bat man is very
known with merchandise and costumes
everywhere.
5. Genre
The Dark Night:
The genre of the film is immediately shown to us
as they show the plane scene, this helps the
audience establish the genre and allow them to
engage with the film.
6. Protagonist (and/or other main
characters)
The Dark Night:
The main character isn't shown to us as the hero
yet, as the movie is just starting we get to see him
as an ordinary man but in the scene that he
appears first the audience could tell that he is
talented because he trains on his shooting skill. By
doing this the producer makes the audience see
the protagonist as a quiet and calm character.
7. A hook (action/event/
chase)
The Dark Night:
the film initially starts with a hook a plane is
flighting over some mountains when another
plane comes over it, the main villain Bain comes
down > destroys the airplane and takes a
hostage. By doing this the producer creates a
hook which leads audience to think what might
happen next or who is this hostage and why
have they taken him.
8. Establishes setting/period
in time
The Dark Night:
The setting for this movie is known, this is due to its
famous history and well known brand. Aside from
that the city where the film takes place isn't
shown to us until about 4 minutes into the film but
even with the late introduction to the setting its
ok due to the fact that its know. The city is called
Gotham.
9. Enigma
The Dark Night:
Enigma is also shown to us immediately as the
audience know that their is something going to
happen with the airplane but they just sit on their
seats eager to find out what, the enigma does
not end their it continues also to after the villain
destroys the plane because he takes a hostage
with him allowing the audience to question what
might happen next.
