u = cost of a wallet
Total cost of wallet and shirts = u + 8u = 270
9u = 270
u = 270 ÷ 9 = $30
Cost of shirt = 2u = 2 x 30 = $60

37. The diagram below shows a small rectangle in a large rectangle. What is the area of the
shaded part?
Area of large rectangle = 12 x 15 = 180 cm2
Height of small rectangle = 12 ÷ 3 = 4 cm
Area of small rectangle = 5 x 4 = 20 cm2
Shaded area = 180 – 20 = 160 cm2
38. Cupcakes were sold in boxes of 4 for $5 per box. Ms Tracy required 45 cupcakes for a
party. Find the cost for her to buy enough cupcakes for the party.
Number of boxes = 45 ÷ 4 = 11 remainder 1, round up ≈ 12
Total cost = 12 x 5 = $60

Fraction of remainder muffins = 9 – 3 – 1 = 5 parts

1 part  305 ÷ 5 = 61
9 parts  61 x 9 = 549

41. At first, Karen and Lily had a total of $1168. Karen spent $136 on a handphone. Lily
earned $184 working part time during the holidays. After that both had the same amount
of money. Find the amount Karen had at first.
u = final amount of money Karen has
2u + 136 – 184 = 1168
2u = 1168 – 136 + 184 = 1120
u = 1120 ÷ 2 = 560
Karen’s initial amount of money = 560 + 136 = $696

42. As shown in the figure below is the shape that is formed after a rectangular piece of
paper is folded. The figure is not drawn to scale.
(a) Find the area of the rectangular piece of paper.
(b) Find the perimeter of the rectangular piece of paper.
(a) Length = 12 + 3 + 3 = 18 cm
Area of rectangular piece of paper = 18 x 3 = 54 cm2
(b) Perimeter of piece of paper = 2 x (18 + 3) = 2 x 21 = 42 cm
