5. Adverbial Clauses of Purpose
A clause, which tells us about the purpose of the verb in the main clause, is
known as an adverb clause of purpose.
Note that an adverb clause is a subordinate clause. Subordinate clauses
cannot stand on their own and must be attached to an independent clause.
Common conjunctions used to introduce adverb clauses of purpose are: so
that, and in order that
• She worked hard so that she might pass the test.
• We eat in order that we may live.
So that is more common than in order that.
So that and in order that are normally followed by modal auxiliary verbs such
as can or will. May is also possible but it is more formal.
• I am working hard so that I can pass the test.
• I am leaving now so that I will be there by six o’clock.
