Introduction :
born in Bedfordshire on 3 August
1803 into a farming family.
He had a number of gardening jobs until in
1823 he began working at Chiswick Gardens
which was leased by the Horticultural Society
from the Duke of Devonshire.
Impressed with his abilities, in 1826, the duke
appointed Paxton head gardener at
Chatsworth House, the Devonshire family's
large country house in Derbyshire.

a fully-sloping glazed roof and flues which opened", early photographs

location in the southern suburbs of London near the large villas to stay
there from 1854 and even ate fire in 1936. As has been building a copy to
him in Sydney, Australia in 1879 and was named Palace Garden, but this
building also met the same fate and devoured fire also. Future proposals
and continues to offer to replace the crystal palace place yet.

Description : Is a 19th-century English country house in the village of Mentmore in
Buckinghamshire. The house was designed by Joseph Paxton and his son-
in-law, George Henry Stokes,[
in the 19th-century revival of late 16th and
early 17th-century Elizabethan and Jacobean styles called Jacobethanfor
the banker and collector of fine art Baron Mayer de Rothschild as a
country home, display case for his collection of fine art. The mansion has
been described as one of the greatest houses of the Victorian era In
keeping with the contents intended to be displayed within, the interiors
take their inspiration principally from the Italian Renaissance, and
Palladian architecture although the house also contains drawing rooms
and cabinets decorated in the gilded styles of late 18th-century France.
Historically it was first known simply as 'Mentmore'. The design is
closely based on that of Robert Smythson's Wollaton Hall.[

arcaded courtyard of a Renaissance palazzo, while Stokes was co-architect
and clerk of works. The builder was the London firm George Myers,
