Poeticizing The Revolution:
The Role of Spoken Word Poetry in
     the Egyptian Revolution

         Maha El Said
         Cairo University
If, one day people chose to live
              Fate is bound to give
in
This presentation aims at showing
how spoken word poetry in its
different forms was and still is a tool
of resistance and revolution.
Tahrir: Heterotopia
Oh people of Egypt fast asleep
Why don’t you wake up and see the day
The Revolution has started in Khartoum
And you are sleeping tight at home
Shouka bouka rats tail
I love you Ass
They say a sly singer is singing I
love you ass
This guy is a climber , liar, and a
hypocrite too
Why should he only love you
We all love you ass
That is because you’re really
understanding
Walking all over us not
understanding
You avoid any understanding
with stupid stubbornness and
persistence
                                      Iman Bakry
I love you Ass
Goha
It feels awful to feel your
homeland is weak
Your voice is weak
Your stand is weak
…
How come while
minding my business I
still get busted
How come I go to jail
for four years pending
investigations
                              Hisham Goghk
They said that I’m a punk
that knows nothing but funk
My learning is limited to
Yahoo Chat and Facebook
My pants are hanging low
just like a true hip
I say “hi” and follow up with
“Thanks” or “Man” or
“peace”
And spit gel over my hair, or
hold it with hair clips
I take all your insult and
accept state of punk
But mind you
One scream from this punk
toppled a government and
brought down a president

El Halamantishy
Oh Egypt it’s almost over its
only a few days
Our morning is bright and
the rascal has no morning
There is nothing left of the
state but a bunch of canes
If you don’t believe me
come to the square and
see
People, masters are only in
the imagination of the
slaves

                                El Bargouty
The Story of the Revolution
We are coming Back We are coming back
With a new heart we are coming back
We are coming back from the past moving
towards the future
 Determined to make
the world a better place
Life- freedom- Egyptian soul
Bread –water – and salt
We are all the same
We have said our word
And the world listens
People come together
Fill the air with zeal
Fill life with passion
Light will certainly come
I’m against the
government against
bullying and injustice
Against the governor
against the government
The rope of injustice is long
Against the government
and have a thousand
evidence
Your blood they have shed
Your killing justified
Your country messed up
Your religion attacked
Your voice is muffled Against the
Your right is eaten up
                                Government
A rhapsody of slogans
Wake up Egyptians Wake up and see
SCAF is now playing openly
They claim they want to protect
legitimacy and manage the whole
budget
Shame on SCAF
Shame on SCAF
Killing rebels en mass
SCAF double agent
You threw the martyrs in the dustbins
What a catastrophe this is SCAF protector
of the revolution
Spoken word poetry “is assumed to
be the possession of the people…it is
the wisdom of the people, it’s the
 peoples knowledge…[making it] a
democratic art in the true sense of
        the word” (Finnegan)
