LA GRANDE VICTOIRE: The Races of Castlebar Re-enactment
A once in a lifetime opportunity to see history being expertly recreated and dramatically brought to life on
the streets of Castlebar, just as it happened in 1798. First a fife and drum band sets the beat as they lead the
Redcoats through the town. A clatter of iron shod hooves will ring throughout Main Street as a mounted
sentry announces the French arrival from his charger. Watch as the Irish Pikemen and French soldiers come
into view, see the redcoats chased down the historic Staball Hill, hear the crackle of muskets, the boom and
bellow of cannon, the clash of steel sword and pikes, as the battle commences in earnest. Watch in awe as
the French army supported by Pikemen advance, retreat and advance again up the Main Street. Cheer the
final victory near Christ Church and enjoy the final action as the redcoats race from the town-hence the
name‘The Races of Castlebar’.
Commemorative dedication at John Moore / French Monuments
Then, join with the dignitaries at a dedication and remembrance ceremony for those from all sides who
participated in the Rebellion of 1798.
