Questions 21–27
Read the article about a young farmer.
Are sentences 21–27 ‘Right’ (A) or ‘Wrong’ (B)?
If there is not enough information to answer ‘Right’ (A) or ‘Wrong’ (B), choose ‘Doesn’t say’ (C).
For questions 21–27, mark A, B or C on your answer sheet.
Young Farmer
At the age of four, Gavin Clark
knew the names of each one of his
neighbour’s cows. By ten, he was
selling chickens and eggs to his
friends, and was winning prizes
for them at farm shows. Now, at
thirteen, he still loves farming and
has his own animals. Presents for
Gavin are not a problem – every
year he gets another animal from his
parents and brother.
Gavin’s father, Steven, works for an
international company and travels all
over the world. Gavin has visited
many exciting places in Europe with
his father, but he is much happier
doing his weekend job on his
neighbour’s farm. Steven’s company
wanted him to move to Portugal with
the family. Everyone liked the idea of
living somewhere warm – but not
Gavin! He said he wouldn’t leave his
animals!
In his free time, Gavin plays tennis
and football. He goes out with his
friends and enjoys computer games,
just like other teenagers. But every
morning he gets up at half past five
to give his animals food and water
before he goes to school. His parents
want him to go to college and get a
diploma when he is sixteen. ‘Let’s
wait and see,’ he says.

Man: Come on. It’s quarter past seven. We don’t
want to be late for the concert.
Woman: Have you checked? I’m sure it doesn’t start
until eight thirty.
Man: It says eight o’clock on the tickets.
Woman: Oh! Well we’ve still got plenty of time – it’ll
only take us ten minutes to get to the theatre.
4 What will Jack do after school today?
Father: I’ve got a problem with my computer, Jack – do
you think you can help me with it when you
get back from school this afternoon?
Son: I’d like to Dad, but I’ve got volleyball practice
until quite late. What about tomorrow, when I
come back from the dentist’s?
Father: That’s no good for me, I’m afraid. Let’s leave it
until the weekend.
Son: OK!
5 How many people were at the dance class today?
Man: Were there many people at the dance class
today?
Woman: Twelve altogether.
Man: Last week there were nine and I was the only
boy!
Woman: Well there were four men there today.
Part 2
Jess: There are some good programmes on television
this evening, Adam. Are you going to watch
them with me?
Adam: I’ll see the news at six with you but then I have
to finish my homework.
Jess: The programme at half past six is about the
kings and queens of England – you should see
that.
Adam: It sounds good. My favourite programme about
the police is at seven thirty, isn’t it?
Jess: That’s tomorrow. Tonight there’s an interesting
programme about Indian elephants I want to see.
Adam: I’ll do my homework then.
Jess: And I don’t suppose you’ll want to see the
programme at eight, about making Italian food.
Adam: Not really. What’s on at nine?
Jess: Something about places to visit in Australia. I
must see that.
Adam: I hope there’s some football tonight.
Jess: That’s at ten. Our favourite team is playing. And
there’s a really good play on after the match,
but I know I’ll be too tired to watch it.
Adam: Me too!
Part 3
Man: Hi, Jan. Have you had a nice holiday?
Woman: Yes thanks, Kim. I was away for two weeks, I
only got back last night.
Man: Did you go to France again with your sister?
Woman: She wanted to go to Italy this year but I’ve
already been there so we decided to go to
Sweden for a change.
Man: Was it was very warm?
Woman: We were lucky – we had sun every day and it
only rained when we left. There was just one
windy day.
Man: It sounds great. Was your hotel expensive?
Woman: My Swedish friend let us stay in her house.
There were some lovely campsites too, but we
didn’t need to use them.
Man: Did you go swimming and sailing?

Woman: The water was too cold! But there was still
plenty to do. My sister spent her time painting
pictures of the countryside. Birds are my hobby
and I saw more than fifty different kinds there.
Man: Did you take many photos?
Woman: My camera broke on the first day so I had to
buy postcards. But you can see them.
Man: Great! Thanks.
Part 4
Woman: Hello…
Man: Hello, I saw your advertisement for a bicycle.
Can you tell me about it, please?
Woman: It’s called a Silver Star. It belonged to my son
but he’s gone to work in Japan.
Man: So is it a Japanese bike – I know they’re very
good.
Woman: It was made in Italy actually. He didn’t ride it
much so it looks like new.
Man: How old is it?
Woman: It was three months old when he bought it and
that was six months ago.
Man: So that means it’s nine months old. It sounds
great. How much is it?
Woman: Well, it was £250 when it was new, but he’s
asking £125 – that’s half price!
Man: Great! Can I come and look at it this evening,
please?
Woman: Yes, certainly. What about six thirty?
Man: Can we make it a bit later? How about quarter
to seven? I don’t finish work until six fifteen.
Woman: That’s OK. And we live at 13, Leighs Road.
Man: That’s L – E – I – G – H – S, isn’t it?
Woman: That’s right. I’ll see you this evening.
Man: Fine!
Part 5
Now if you’re looking for something to do this weekend,
why not join in the Bartlow town race on Saturday. The
race starts at Bartlow Town Hall and finishes at the
football stadium, that’s five kilometres. And don’t worry
if you can’t run all that way – walkers are welcome too!
The race begins at quarter past ten but you should arrive
at the Town Hall forty-five minutes before, at half past
nine, to check in and get your race number.
There are money prizes for the winners in the different
age groups and everybody will get a free T-shirt when
they finish. Adults pay £2 each to run in the race. It’s
only £1.50 for children and students and if the whole
family decide to run there’s a special price of £5 per
family.
Don’t forget to bring some water with you – Saturday’s
going to be a lovely warm day and you may get thirsty.
But it’ll be lots of fun –see you there!
