Worcestershire Local Enterprise Partnership’s (WLEP’s) Sixth Annual Conference has been hailed a great success.
The event, which consistently attracts a large business audience, took place on Friday (4 November 2016) at the Chateau Impney in Droitwich.
This year saw the largest attendance at any WLEP Conference with many others tuning in to watch the live broadcast. The Conference was hosted by the business author, journalist and ‘Outrageously Optimistic’, Guy Browning, with a keynote speech from the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Rt. Hon Sajid Javid MP, who was joined with other speakers from high-profile local businesses, futurist experts and other respected guests.

Defining the challenge – what’s missing?
No strategic activity Innovation community is
slowly evolving
Stakeholders and initiatives

innovation
Programmes are reactive, rather

‘Passive’ support, rather

Quick broad definition needed
Defining Innovation?
Innovation should be seen as a mind-set
Not just innovating new products and services…
…but new ways to evolve, deliver and support
Business Enterprise R&D Expenditure (£ per FTE)

16th out of 39 LEP areas
Gov R&D Expenditure (£ per FTE)
£1 against a peak of £363 (Gloucs, Wilts and Bristol/Bath)
24th out of 30 NUTS2 regions
InnovateUK Investment
22nd out of 39 LEP regions.

Where are we now:
No great measure of innovation and performance, however, by a number of measures – these being the best i.e. R and D Expenditure, Government R and D Expenditure and InnovateUK Investment – Worcestershire is starting from a low baseline.
NB – these are the latest statistics – no further updates but when there were 39 LEPs
NUTS2 areas (group some areas together – i.e. bigger than individual LEPs)
Recognise a business needs different things at different stages in its life-cycle – Worcs needs to recognise the what where when
Need a focal point to create more scale ups – should involve the University and need to build a reputation as a place where innovation flourishes and as a place to do business.
