Learning happens
anytime and
anywhere, so why
not learn from your
fridge!
Numeracy - Maths learning isn't restricted to
school.
There are things you can do at home to help your child learn and
improve thier everyday mathematics.
Be positive about maths.
Don't say things like "I can’t do maths" or "I hated maths at school" or "I was bad at maths
too"; your child might start to think like that themselves and then lower their own
expectations of themselves.
Point out the maths in everyday life.
Include your child in activities involving maths such as using money, cooking, board games
and travelling.
Praise your child for effort rather than talent This shows them that by working hard
they can always improve.
Encourage them to know that there is always more than one way to get the answer.
Wellbeing -What is
resilience?
Resilience is the ability to cope with
change and challenges – to‘bounce
back’ and recover when things go
wrong. Ups and downs, change and
challenges are a normal part of life and everyone goes
through periods of feeling stressed, angry or unhappy.
Resilient families develop their own words and phrases to
help each other get through the inevitable tough times
that each person experiences. The language of resilience
generally refers to coping strategies such as empathy,
humour and acceptance. On the back you will find a copy
of the 10 best phrases you can use at home to with
students to develop resilience.

Technology -The App store trap!
We’ve all had our children at one time or another
ask us to download an app for their device.
Sometimes we ask them what does it do, tell me
about it, how old do you have to be? Sometime we
don’t. It’s important to know that the ratings for apps in
the App store are not always reflective
of the actual age appropriate for use of
the app..
For example, the Facebook app has an
age rating of 4+, whilst Snapchat and
Instagram have 12+. However all three apps require you to be over the
age of 13 to have an account to use them. Children are aware of this,
so will often use the age rating as a tool to get an app they are after, so
make sure you are fully aware of the age appropriateness of apps
before downloading them .
Also be aware that there are thousands of inappropriate apps students
can come across by simply browsing in the App Stores.
